I just purchased a Meerschaum lined pipe, it is a older Dr Grabow, and it tastes gross, and smells gross, i cant even explain it, i am about to put some PA through it, but i just dont know. I bought it old, but unsmoked, is there anything i can do?
reckon ud better check with someone else then, i have only 1 meer lined so im green on the subject. but smoked or not, if it sat round any length of time it prob drew damp and musty etc
Give it a good salt and rum cleaning . Let it dry out for about two days and try again . Why rum beacause I like Meyars dark rum and do not want to waste good scotch .
Its soaking in gin and salt,i like the way a decent fruity gin makes straight VA's tastes, ill give it a shot in a couple days, it was so disgusting i couldnt even sit near it, if it doesnt work, im just gonna toss it, i cant stand the smell
Toss it in the oven after that on a towel with the stem removed and bake it at low tempetures to remove all the stench . Only use the oven for just plain old nasty pipes .
Didnt end up doing it, i think it was the glue that held the meer lining into the briar, after a night in the salt and alcohol the liner came out of the briar, and the outside of the lining (inside of the briar) smelled even worse, i couldnt take it, and i couldnt get the insert back into the pipe(without breaking it) so i chucked it, worst 10 dollars ever spent
