Meer vs Briar

My understanding is African is harder but not used to make pipes anymore. I have an African block meer from the 60’s or so. It is a Thompson brand.

Did I see black Meerschaum once? Is that a thing?

The top of a lot of African meters I have seen is black

I still think most of a meer's color comes from the outside.
