You're forgetting that 19 out of 20 people who start pipe smoking quit by the two year mark (nothing new, it's always been that way), and it has been six years since McC closed shop.

Then add two tablespoons of the fact that the born-into-social-media-generation reached smoking age since then as well.

Blend on high for 30 seconds, and pour into a tall chilled glass.
Plus social media has encouraged people to get into hobbies really hard, shelling out hundreds after like a month. They'll see YTPC guys with 100 pipes and 20 blends in their cellars, both of which probably took years to build up, and want to emulate that. They don't have the patience to get a cob or basket and stick with an OTC pouch until they get the hang of it. It's even more rampant with cigars, you'll see guys who've only been smoking a few months with a fully stocked cabinet humidor.

Great observation!

Obsessive/compulsives are drawn to a variety of "hobbies" (read: obsessions). The do tend to go overboard when getting into something new. It's their nature. And, they did so before the advent of "social media."

Exactly, I know a few people like that who don't even use social media beyond just FB to keep up with people. They find a new thing, drop tons of money on it for a few months, then never take it up again. To me it seems they like they idea of having a cool hobby more than just doing it for the fun of it
