Someone on a broadcast recently offered what he said was a Winston Churchill quote. Like Twain, Churchill gets credit for many quotes, some his and some not. But in any case, I like this one. "A fanatic is someone who can't stop talking and who won't change the subject."

Another Churchill yarn. At a dinner party, the hostess perceived that one of the guests who was a stranger to her was pocketing the silverware, and told Sir Winston about it. Wanting to stop the theft without causing a ruckus, Winston pocketed some silverware himself, sidled up to the thief and flashed the item in his own pocket, and said: "They're onto us, man. We'd better put it back." And supposedly the thief complied.

Yup - always a good man for a quote.
Just two from me.
The first is from one of his greatest speeches, toward the beginning of the war. It was the speech used at the end of the Gary Oldman film 'The Darkest Hour' and reflects the man's utter defiance at a time when things looked dark for England:
“We shall not flag or fail. We shall go on to the end. We shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and the oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be. We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender.”
The second quote seems to me to be especially relevant these days when 'truth' seems so often to be a negotiable concept to our leaders (and we get it in the UK too):
“A lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to get its pants on.”

'My dear you are ugly, but tomorrow I shall be sober and you will still be ugly': Winston Churchill when guest derides him for being drunk, one of my favorites!

Winston had a running feud with that lady, and she said, "Sir Winston, if I were your wife, I'd poison your tea." And he retorted, "And if you were my wife, I'd drink it."
