FUN FACT: In the old west , some of the general store owners would have their inventory of strike anywhere matches kept in the local bank safe or vault. If not mice and rats would chew on them and burn down the whole town.
I use this when at the house. You load hemp wick in it and off you go. It sat for a long time as I thought it was stupid, but once I started using it I had that "A HA!" moment...
The usual grocery store kitchen matches available here suck for any purpose, but particularly for pipe smoking. Infuriating horrible stinking things they are, and about as easy to light as a wet sponge, but thankfully they drove me to search for a better solution and I discovered Swan. So, no hard feelings I suppose. MUCH.
Diamond Greenlight are the only ones I see anywhere. I read an article that posited the reason no one else makes them is that UPS and FedEx, the only carriers - USPS will not ship them - started charging HAZMAT shipping rates. Diamond was the only company that could absorb the cost.
I use redbirds in the rare occasions I use matches. They aren't the best but readily available at Canadian Tire. For a long time I underestimated the convenience and ease of a regular old bic lighter. Now it's all i really use, unless really windy. Then I use my pipe zippo.
I'm a confirmed match guy. I use Diamond Greenlight kitchen matches as a rule, although I do like having some of the smaller boxes for their portability.
Swan Vestas are nice, and I'll buy 'em if I see 'em, but kitchen matches work well enough that I won't do any work to find them.
