Hey yall, I came across warnings from people jarring / preserving things other than tobacco today that got me wondering about the jars in my cellar. They said when you tighten the rim down it makes an impression in the seal which deforms it and can prevent a good seal after you've released the rim, so the lids are considered a one time use.

Is that something I should consider for my cellared tobaccos in mason jars or is that just overkill / only applicable for food preservation? I have a lot of jars that i opened / closed several times just to try the tobacco before deciding to cellar.

Thanks!

i am curious how storing your jars horizontally doesn't get fines and dust on the seal. many people do so i guess it doesn't affect it. I store mine upright and am not afraid to replace a lid here and there. there's a certain feel to one that has run it's course. buy a few packs when you're at the store for backups. also during the covidz lids were gouged severely as rings and jars obviously last a good long while

I used to make the mistake of over tightening the shit out of my jars and that will mess up a seal. If you just tighten it enough to let the seal do the work they hold up well.

The caveman in me thought “tighter must be better so big tight mean more better.” Not the case here though.

I second @BigR on this. The one time use guideline only applies to canning. For tobacco storage, you can reuse lids to your heart's delight.

Minor odor retention is a factor, however, even when thoroughly washed. But it's pretty easy to tell which lids have been on jars containing aromatics, likewise English blends. So I simply keep my used lids within the same blend genre throughout their lives.

Yea the warning about reusing lids is mostly for true canning since it's got pressure and heat thing going on and must basically be sterile. Even a pinhole will ruin the jar if canning food.

Also if you get frustrated with sharp edges and hints of rust on regular rings and lids, they sell aftermarket ones with thick silicone gaskets.
