For anyone like me who loves reading through the old Pipe Lovers Magazines which are online, in every issue there is a large amount of ads for Marxman brand pipes...

Richard Carleton Hacker, whom I referenced in a previous post in this thread, also stated, "But perhaps Bob Marx's greatest contribution to pipe smoking was his decision to take out numerous four-color ads on the back cover of Pipe Lovers magazine, starting with the first full year of publication that began with the January 1946 issue, a marketing move that made it financially possible for publisher-editor-writer George Cushman to launch his labor of love and keep it alive until April, 1950."

Also, Mr. Hacker mentions that the band on the Marxman Four Hundred was made from 14-carat gold.

Pipe Dreamer and Star Gazer

Club History

The International Association of Pipe Smokers' Clubs, Inc. was founded in October of 1949 and incorporated in the State of New York, City of Schenectady, County of Schenectady, on July 15, 1952.

Mr. Robert Marx, founder of the famous Marxman Pipe, was the first man to put on a Pipe Smoking Contest. He owns the world's most famous pipe, sculpted by Joe Davidson, that is insured for $7,500.

In 1647, the Burghers of New Amsterdam (now New York City) held what has been known as the Smoker's Rebellion. Peter Stuyvesant, the Governor of the settlement, had ordered an edict forbiding pipe smoking by the Dutch Colonists in Public. The burghers were so roused by the edict that a huge party was organized and visited the governor's home. Great clouds of smoke were seen by the citizens of the then small colony. Their point was made and the Governor withdrew his order.

While at the 1952 IAPSC contest in Long Beach, California, Paul Spaniola was paged by a Mrs. Wolfson from Twentieth Century Fox Studios. She first verified with Paul that he was the World Champion Pipe Smoker. Then she wanted to know if he would come over to the studio and teach Susan Hayward how to smoke a pipe for the movie "The President's Lady." Of course he agreed. While at the studio, dozens of publicity photos were taken. (See photo left.) Paul was a bit of a showman himself -- it's a wonder they ever got him out of Hollywood!

In the last month or so I’ve bought a lot of Marxman pipes, for about 25 dollars delivered.

Here’s about a hundred dollars worth, not counting postage.

Marxman made utterly fantastic good smokers. They smoke cool and dry, and not one I’ve tried so far imparts any kind of skunky flavors to the smoke.

The secret of Bob Marx’s success was picking the best smoking briar available.

By far, the best value in used pipes is a pre 54 Marxman. This eight paneled medium sitter cost $19.50 delivered, it’s almost perfect, and a dynamite good smoker, like every other genuine Marxman I own.

These Marxmans have me not wanting to smoke other brands, even Lees.

70+ year old Algerian briar must be tried, to be believed just how good it smoked.

That’s a beauty.
I’m sitting here examining it.

The eight panels are all slightly different, and the four sided square shank has four different sides. This thing was had made.

There’s no grade on it, just Marxman Imported Briar. The grain on it could not be any denser, but it’s not flashy.

That’s a lot of pipe for twenty bucks, you know?

These are fun objects. You can really connect to the human author of the pipe. The flaws become precious. I only have one but maybe some day I’ll ship another over to Japan. I doubt I’ll ever see one on auction here.

I just bought this one for $23 delivered.

This, by golly is hand carved.:)

That putty could be redone, but the pipe cost less than a big meal at the drive thru for two.

Look at this hand carved B size Jumbo.

The B Jumbo was about $10, which would buy ten nice standard Yello Bole pipes in the thirties and forties.

I think we take Marxman pipes for granted.

In the Depression, a farm laborer would have had to labor for days in the sun, to buy what we can for the price of two big meals at the drive thru burger joint.
