Frankly Idgaf if only pre-2007 blends remain, it's still plenty of good ones to choose from. And if all tobacco disappears I'll be ok too. I can take or leave smoking, I'm not addicted. There are helluva lot more serious things going on these days to worry about than pipe tobacco.

There is a support the leaf movement being sponsored by the cigar industry and they are marching on Washington.

I keep seeing mention of takes increasing on tobacco. The FDA doesn't have the authority to impose taxes. It's possible that congress could do so, but frankly, they have larger fish to fry.

FDA and tobacco are what we notice right now. We, because it is important to us. This is one relatively small part of a much larger issue. Today, the US citizenry accept a much more intrusive and powerful federal government than our great grandfathers did. FDA, BTAF, DEP, IRS or presidentially appointed "Czars". All more powerfull. All rule by administative regulatory authority. How did we get here? My opinion, largely due to career politicitions. The founders could not have envisioned it. Twenty, thirty, forty years in office? Don't think it is in anyones best interest except the career office holder. Not to late. Yes, I am an optimist!

@Sable- I agree completely, and sort of rely on this forum as an information source on how we might impact these issues. I would like to hear more details on ANY positive steps we can take, like this proposed march. I may not be able to go to DC, but I can sure as hell put my money where my mouth is and support it financially, even if in a modest way. I'm starting to think I should start monitoring other forums that have similar areas of interest, such as cigar forums, or other pipe forums. The more information we can get, the better.

did you hear about Mrs. McGurkle's cat climbing into her wood chipper?
I wanna hear how this story ends. It has a happy ending right? Right?
I have a surplus of roma tomatoes right now, which means tobacco will grow well here. I have plans to expand the garden and get at least 4-6 plants going in the Spring. I ran out of time this year. I will be buying seeds soon and am likely going to start with burley and red virginia and possibly some really strong stuff. I'm glad I can grow here, as not everyone is in that position.

My only suggestion is that each one of us needs to find a way to handle what's coming. We aren't going to stop it. Some will hoard. Some will live with what's available. I'll probably stick with my 3 Star Blue and what brands are available locally and on-line. And, possibly, an annual trip or two to Ireland and England. But, I'm certainly not going to lose sleep over a problem I have no control over. Maybe the social pendulum will swing in our direction some day in the future? I doubt it.
My thought for the future is, one day smoking will cease to be of social interest due to the insignificant number of smokers. Then it might start to expand, slowly and unnoticed. Not in my lifetime but, it might happen in a few generations.

Plant more than that. They are easy to grow. Unless you plan to flue cure or sun cure the Virginia I wouldn't bother. You need the intense heat to lock in the sugars.

@jitterbugdude - My first year growing anything, I start with just a few plants to get a good idea of how larger numbers will go. It may seem overly cautious, but space and water are a concern and the first run will complete my planning stage for a larger crop. Growing Virginias is the exciting part. I'm not too worried about the curing process, aside from the time involved. They will have a unique terroir, and will be the only Virginias I'll be able to cellar (Jar), since I keep smoking all the tins showing up at my house. :puffy:

I feel horrible for all those in the industry. The way I see this playing out is Philip Morris and Scandinavian buying up smaller companies as they begin to feel the sting of excessive fees and begin to fail. They will then have a corner on the market and prices will rise because of lack of competition rather than taxes. This will do nothing to hinder consumption of tobacco. The rich get richer.

Change is inevitable. How many whalers were put out of business by petroleum.
It is sad that so many seemingly good people are going to be hurt. But good people are always hurt.

I'm pretty conflicted about today. I'm lucky enough to have a sizable caller before today BUT I have friends and associates this directly affects.
I don't blame the politicians for this, they clearly have no clue. I blame the voters for enabling them by constantly reelecting them.
Everyone wants change, but wanting without specifics just as dangerous.

I picked up 5 oz. of my favorite house blend to celebrate. I've actually almost hit all of my cellar goals. I've been telling my non forum buddies that they need to stock up. I hope they heed the advice.

Most of us out there have a favorite (s) blend, the only impact I see coming is those dam warnings attached to the tin from now on. Now the impact of this regulation will unarguably be seen on new blends that arn't grandfathered but Im more concerned about the pipe makers, these artist will be crushed under this reg, I can live without new tobacco blends, but to effectively stop the production of artisan pipes is unimaginable.
