Gold is perfectly legal. I wonder, are there are limits to that?
The problem comes with the exchange rate. All precious metals are sold with at least a 15% mark up, and bought with one as well, so you lose 30% with the whole exchange. But, if you are saving for the long haul... it's the only way to go.

Traditional manuals are becoming extinct. (Both my cars are manuals.) Traditional automatics are the best that they've ever been. (I kind of wish my newer car was a traditional auto.) CVT automatics are becoming more popular with manufacturers due to fuel economy, but they're not fun to drive, especially if you want the feeling of some performance. DCT auto/semiautos are fun to drive at a boil, & you aren't going to do it any faster or better in a traditional manual. My big problem with the DCT auto/semiautos is that while better in every respect than older single-clutch setups, they still aren't fun to poke around town in, at least, not until probably the last couple of years. I drove a DCT VW for a couple of weeks, this was almost 4 years ago, & it was weird around town. Felt slushy sometimes, slammed through gear-changes sometimes, crept forwards from a stop if you let off of the brake. It was supposed to be good, but I didn't really like it. For the record, I'm pretty sure I never bothered to use the paddles. From what I hear, the newest Porsches have gotten DCT auto/semiauto overall driveability ironed out pretty well within the last couple of years, I guess those are built by ZF with Bosch programming, & the new C8 'vette has a new Tremec DCT auto/semiauto, I guess with Delco programming. In my opinion, that's what's going to make or break that new 'vette. If the trans is irritating to drive around town in due to mechanical or programming issues, or when it's too hot, or too cold, etc. etc., it's all you're going to hear about.

One could argue that transmissions might become extinct, as most electric vehicles are direct-drive.

I wonder if Europeans prefer manuals. When I went to Elsaß in AD 2018 at the rental office the guy told me, "the only ones I have now are all automatic, though", as if that were a kind of deal breaker. I said I didn't care and drove off in a Toyosux.
It could be. It was like 60 pounds more a day for the automatic which seemed excessive to me.

I still know people who make new car transactions in cash.

Yea, I've seen this. It's not usually a squeaky clean thing. Plus, for some unknown reason, the car business gets a lot of breaks. I guess it could be done legally, but that would definitely have to be legit bank cash with a withdrawal slip. Just like tobacco, the inconvenience will make cash technically legal but basically impossible.

A cash deal at a distributor will get you huge discount. It may be a little on the sly, but damn, do we want Big Brother in on every purchase?
I hate the idea that one day, I can't just sell a used lawnmower to a neighbor without having Big Gov taking their cut immediately on the deal.

The development of the automatic transmission and horsepower wars (700 to 1500ish) has rendered the manual nearly extinct. Blame Formula 1, drivers can shift faster and have quicker laptimes with paddle shifters. Nearly every modern supercar these days is faster with a high tech automatic and paddle shifters, which allows for launch control, etc.

One downside to my daughters manual VW - this winter she asked if she could install a remote start. Nope (to my knowledge).

The new, mid-engine Corvette is automatic only, for the first time in the model history, here's why. They basically don't want to cut a hole in the tunnel to poker a shift up thru!

I drove a previous version ZR1 Vette last summer (600+ HP), with paddle shifters. It was a bit awkward, I suppose I might have gotten used to it (and that much HP).

One of my crazy acquaintances had a GTI. Every time I met him, he was doing some performance mods. When I first drove his GTI it was having stage 2 mods. It created a lot of drama but not particularly fast but still enjoyable. Then he did something which he called stage 3 mod. I think he was just doing ECU tunings. Then the car became really scary to drive. At regular idling speeds it did not have a lot of torque. If you then pushed the throttle just a bit, torque will suddenly build up, you will feel that you are hit with a hammer, and the car will wheelspin and lurch forward. It was scary. He then proceeded to show me what his car can do in a twisty backroad. After a few miles, the brakes started to burn. Another scary experience.

wow. stage 3 is usually fully intercooled with hardline tune.
however you have to upgrade other things as well... probably needs a LSD and doesn't sound like it was tuned correctly. also depends a lot on what model year etc

also probably went with too big of a turbo for the motor so it takes too long to spool which is the hammer drop to which you refer.

He told me he has a LSD. But probably nothing else. Of course I don’t understand mods, and just repeating what he told me.
