Self-driving cars, getting rid of pocket currency in favor of all using APPs as currency, robotics... it's like developers are all ignoring all warnings given to us through movies, books, etc...
I'm not a total luddite. Technology itself is not evil, but what some developers are doing with it is evil. I think that we need to all swarm car lots with self-driving cars, flip them and set shit on fire.
And, those wanting to go to a total electronic currency need a new tar and feather suit.

Let's face it. The day of Shank's Mare (if people even remember what that means) is gone. One must drive to the mailbox. (If it isn't delivered to the front door next day.) Money? It is a plastic card, either debit or credit. Tar? Comes with a Proposition 65 warning. Feathers? Probably a protected species. We did it to ourselves.

There will come a day, when that when you are assigned a SSN, you also get access to an account, and all transactions will be electronic... so no buying aged tobaccos without paying all taxes, and no buying it from someone not licensed to sell tobacco. No more paying cash top a 14 year old to mow the yard. And, no transactions of any kind without Big Brother watching over it.

The day is coming. Bit coin and all of those demonic money exchangers are all vying to be the official... one. This scares me more than either side of politics or even the impending tobaccolypse.

Cosmic, I think those paddle shifters and other variations on automatic trans that offer a semi-shift option are just placating the consciences of people who think they'd rather drive manual but don't. I think the manual use on those approaches zero. I owned one of those and never used it, just because it came with a car I liked otherwise; I certainly didn't buy it for that. P.S. It was the best car I've owned in terms of amenities, but the warranty work was incredible -- two a.c. jobs, two engine fans, and a blown wheel bearing. It was a Subaru assembled in the U.S. I'd never had a car that needed that much work, but the service manager was a champ and took good care of me, and we got the car to where it should be. It was a life lesson in the fact that I don't need or want many bells and whistles.

I recently read that many farmers are buying up old (pre-1990) tractors and farm implements at farm auctions because they are easier and less expensive to maintain than the computerized implements of today, which practically require an IT degree to work on.

I learned to drive on a stick. For a sports car, yes I want manual. For a commuting car, no way. Sitting in stop and go rush hour traffic with your foot on the clutch is exhausting. Same with motorcycles. I want a Ducati Diavel with a CVT or dual clutch transmission. When you live in the city, constantly shifting is a pain in the butt plus when you consider that most bikes today are so powerful, you never get out of second before having to stop again. About 10 years ago I switched from my Buell to a mega scooter and never looked back.

When we went to England this last summer, all the cars to rent were manual and It was like another 60lbs a day to rend a manual. Being cheap I went with the manual. Driving on the other side of the rode didn't threw me off, shifting with my right had did.
I wonder if Europeans prefer manuals. When I went to Elsaß in AD 2018 at the rental office the guy told me, "the only ones I have now are all automatic, though", as if that were a kind of deal breaker. I said I didn't care and drove off in a Toyosux.

Yes, the day of the subdermal microchip (the real 666) is coming. By then, online tobacco sales will have been banned, though. So no worries on that front. I'd say more but that'd be veering into religious posts.

What I will say is that the sheeple is being driven to that through convenience: these youngsters thing it's the coolest thing to swipe their phone at the grocery store.

They won't even need chips, when they have touch DNA detectors. But, really, this isn't very far away. Right now it has been debated a few times already. APP designers already have the software ready. All they need now is a bill. It's already here. And, guess who is pushing it... Apple.

Yep. They all stand in line to pay 800 bucks for the newest tracking device (phone). People will give up anything any amount of liberty to stay up with the masses. Just find someone and tell them cash is being outlawed.. they will almost surely tell you, its inconvenient for them anyway, so who cares? We used to have gold.. then we had paper loosely backed by gold.. now we have no money, only digits that represent the idea of money. It is impossible to gift, spend, or store any amount of cash over a few thousand dollars.

If you were pulled over and found with a bag of 20 thousand dollars it would be held until you can prove it was obtained legally.. Maybe you can do this, but what if you can't?

Last week I had to go to the university to check up on my honours degree status. To my dismay, when I pulled into the visitor parking I found out that all meters had been disabled and now you have to use pay stations wherein you have to punch in your plate or your phone (and pay by card, I'm assuming, and we all know how munificent banks are when sharing our purchases with third parties). I pulled out of there and managed to find meters still working on the street. Yep, cash is being phased out alright.

Yes ... occasionally. In mountains, curvy roads, etc...

However, in many modern cars, you don’t need it in most cases. My car has a flat torque curve from about 1400RPM till redline. Pairing that with a sports focused automatic transmission, the car is always driving at the sweet spot and requires real talent (Which I don’t think I have) to get the car to give extra oomph driving it manual. I do it for fun though occasionally. When I had a slower car I downshifted a couple of gears to pass quickly.
Has anyone ever test drove one with paddle shifters? I drove a friend's Maserati, and my jury is still out on the whole paddle shifter option for me. If the car is already automatic, would I use the shifters, knowing that it is all electronic anyways?

they suck. usually the auto on a high performance car is tuned better than you are able to shift with the paddles.

An old customer of mine, was left the Maserati when her husband died, and was upside down on the loan. So, she was stuck with it. She always used the paddle shifters, and drove that Maserati down the road like a jumping low rider, and the surface of that thing was starting to look like a crumpled paper bag. I tried driving it with the shifters, but I couldn't do any better in it. But, she insisted that it was fun to drive, ha ha. She just needed a horn that played La Cucaracha.
