Perhaps the pipe or tobacco isn't the cause of your restless nights. Do you drink 35 cups of coffee a day or a cup in the evenings. As we get older caffeine can cause a lot of sleepless nights.
Good question but I have a couple of cups of coffee in the morning and after midday I always drink decaffeinated.
The problem is clearly the pipe.
As previously mentioned, I normally sleep like a log but if I smoke my pipe I start to feel the effect towards the end of the smoke and I'm slightly "elevated" for the rest of the day. After all, I have a foreign chemical inside me, albeit a small dose.
I then have a restless sleep. I'm conscious whereby my mind is awake/aware, more aware of my heartbeat, and just have difficulty settling. In other words, nicotine as a stimulant is doing its job.
I'm pretty fit. Can easily cycle up the hills and jog a bit.
I have good stamina. In June I did a 3500 mile solo tour on my motorbike around Europe in a fortnight, so I'm hardly sedentary.
I've only recently started pipe smoking again so it will be no problem at all to stop.
I can only think that all you hardened smokers have built up a good tolerance to nicotine.
With my system being totally nicotine free, the "hit" is far more intense...... and so, I'm searching for a "weak" blend that I can enjoy.....and sleep well.
