I have decide my favorite shape for a pipe is a pipe with a flat stem. I like them straight, 1/4 bent, 1/2 bent, it doesn't really matter. I just like the thin feel of the flat stem and the wider, the better.

Is a lovat strictly a straight pipe with a flat stem, or is it any pipe with a flat stem whether it be bent or straight? I often wondered.

Lovat is a sub-shape of the Canadian family. You can safely consider it a shape in its own right.

It must have a round shank and a saddle stem, with the shank-stem's length being at least twice the bowl's height.

If you want a "flat" stem you need to look at a Lumberman.

High end pipe makers know how to make a tapered stem fit comfortably, but many production makers leave them pretty fat = uncomfortable to clench. An example is the Savinelli 320 KS. I have sold or given away all of them. I like to clench with a softie bit and it's damn near impossible.

The beauty of a saddle stem is they are always on the thin side whether it's a production or an Artisan.

I agree the saddle stem is comfortable and fits the Lovat perfectly. I think it depends on the shape of the briar to flow with the stem.

Of the Canadian family, the Lovat is definitely my favorite shape, really not to thrilled to look at oval shanked pipes. I may have one or two but they rarely get smoked.
