First post here. So in the last year I've been reading reviews and buying different types of tobacco trying to hone in on what I really enjoy. I have only been smoking a pipe for around 2 years and like many started off with aromatics and pretty quickly moved on to wanting to taste the tobacco rather than the sweet topping. In my quest I have discovered that my absolute favorite tobacco I have tried to date is the Seattle Pipe Club rum barrel aged version of Mississippi River, followed by the special reserve and normal editions. The first time I smelled the tin note and got that straight Vinegar smell I was in heaven. For me I get that same Vinegar sharp sour taste in my mouth when smoking it. I instantly started searching the internet for other comparable tobaccos but thus far have come up short. the closest for me has been the plum pudding variations. They have a very similar tin not with that vinegar scent but a more rounded smoky taste than the mississippi river. Other folks have told me that I must like Virginias cause they seem to be tart but I have several straight virginias like carolina red flake, hogshead, peterson flake, deluxe navy rolls, macbaren vanilla roll cake ect and while I enjoy them none of them give me that taste. at the recommendation of others I tried Kings ranson from ken byron, st bruno flake, gawith rum flake, krumble cake no.4, Queit nights, izmir Turkish ect. Many of them have a venigar tart tin note but not so much in the taste. I would love to get some feedback from all of the experts on here. Thanks Everone!!! Stu

Your sampling of Virginia blends didn't include most of the best IMHO. Try Capstan Gold, MB HH Pure Virginia and Virginia Flake, Fribourg & Treyer Golden Mixture and Cut Virginia Plug to name a few. I think you'll find more of the attributes you described as positive.
I find your lack of faith in the Special Brown Flake disturbing.

The two most vinegar-y blends currently available, that I'm aware of, are Mississippi River Special Reserve, and Sutliff Matured Red Virginia 515 RC-1.

I should add that I don't like either MRSP or 515 RC-1. I dislike the vinegar taste in both of them.
I'm just saying that they're vinegar-y, if that's what you're looking for.

My favorite VAs include HH Pure Virginia, Opening Night, Newminster 400, Capstan Blue, and aged Orlik Golden Sliced (but latter has to be aged many years -- the first four are great fresh).

(For some reason, the F&T offerings are not so much to my liking as these.)

For me, it's McClelland's Red Virginias like McCranies Red Ribbon (still can be found for a price) and easier to get Sutliff Crumble Kake red Virginia. Robert McConnell Red Virginia, Wessex, F&T blackjack , if you detect a pattern it's Red Virginia

Have to chime in with a mention of Sutliff 515 RC-1 as @SBC mentioned -- seems to be a love it or hate it blend, definitely has a vinegar note -- in my opinion, if properly dried, the stuff is amazing; very lemony yet bready, I call the flavor 'toast with lemon jam' in my head...definitely needs to be smoked slowly.
This has also been my experience.

A year ago I was gifted a box of jarred tobaccos (mostly blenders). Included was 515 RC-1, so I had to try it straight, since it's tangy, nose-tingling tartness reputation preceded it. Definitely not for me, but it gave me a new thing to taste in blends.

Well, it just so happened that there was a small plug of Plum Pudding in there as well, which I hadn't smoked in over 6 years. While working through the few bowls it provided, I kept noticing that tart Virginia tang not unlike the 515 RC-1. Clearly, since Sutliff is making Seattle Pipe Club's blends, they are sneaking (or not sneaking) this vinegary tobacco into it. And I think there may be others as well, I'm just not sure which.
