Thanks for the tip, it's those kinds of tidbits that I look for. The tamper is the main thing I'm looking for besides the actual flame. I might get an old boy just to try that style of lighter, and they just look classic.

I have some Old Boys with tampers, which I will use only in desperation: much prefer a separate tamper.

Probably not helpful, but when I go on holiday or having a pipe night i try and grab a box of matches. I find this adds another nice element to the experience. Most of my smoking is on the go so I use a zippo.

+1 for Bic lighters.

I've got some really cool lighters including a Zippo with the pipe insert but I kept turning to a Bic when a lighter needed to be filled or a new flint.

Bought by the 3 pack for $4.00aud Bics are cheap. [I buy 4 packs at a time so I get a discount] That's about $1usd a lighter.
They're efficient and reliable until they run dry.
One can have several lying around so they're readily at hand [rather than the 'Shit, now where did I put that lighter?' routine several times a day]

So now I've got a nice collection of lighters that sit in a box and use Bic lighters for sheer convenience.

I've had this Lotus for a couple of months. Very easy to refill and generally works well. I didn't want to fool with flints and such. You just need follow their instructions. About $30.

That is something to consider. I have to carry both but found it's worth it. Also, those Old Boy tools are kind of short if you have a pipe with a deep bowl.

I like a Zippo. The flame handles well in wind and it is a dependable lighter. Zippo has been around a long time. Servicemen have taken them into the marshes of Vietnam, the cold temperatures of Korea, dust, sand, wind and they keep on lighting.

Unpopular opinion: Bic with hemp wick. More precise lighting, low temp flame, no taste of fuel. Some might think it's slightly less convenient to light, or disparage its use because of its connotations with wacky tobbacy, but it works great for me.

I have several of every type except the wick thing. IM Corona Old Boys are the top of the lot. (But useless in winds over 15 kts.)

I have an old boy,it has been reliable for about 5 years now .Although I have had to replace the flint tube twice as I dropped it and it landed on the end of the tube breaking the little lug that holds the striker wheel on..
However my best lighter by far is a Dunhill Rollergas pipe lighter,but that never leaves the house

Small soft flame, no heartbreak when losing one, can buy 50 for less than $50, and usually needs no repair if dropped.

I moved over to a bic recently. Love my zippos but filling them when I want them has it’s drawbacks. The bic might be the most convenient lighter in existence.

If I don’t want to carry a tamper, at least 1 of my fingers is always with me. Works fine.
