Based on tales here, I decided to try loading some blends into a pipe the night before. So far I have tried it with some Virginia flakes, like FVF and Newminster 400. I have found that I like it; one gets drier tobacco, but without the crumbly dust that comes with manipulating a dried flake into the pipe.

I’m wondering if this is solely a trick for wet Va pressed tobacco, or is this something that improves a ribbon blend, or burley, or anything else?

I don't do it habitually but it's worked every time I've ever tried it. Sometimes I do an overnight load on purpose. Other times it's from forgetfulness. Occasionally I've loaded a pipe and then accidentally forgot about it for weeks, and what do you know... it's still actually pretty good.

I don’t usually walk around “Bing” style but I did today. I’m referring to clenching a loaded and unlit Pipe. I was getting a nice flavor from the unlit tobacco and when I finally got to smoke the flavor matched my expectations. I had a very enjoyable smoke because of the anticipation. It dried some, but only on the top. It took a light well but gave my normal one hour smoke. No surprises.

I quite often load a pipe or two for the future, intending to smoke them in an hour or two, but get to them in a day or two, or find them loaded and capped in my van or workshop several weeks later. I left a pipe with a cork lid loaded with Newminster #80 in my van for a week and a half recently, and it was -21° overnight on several nights, it didn't lose any flavour. I have a few random jars out in my unheated workshop that smoke just fine after freezing and thawing repeatedly.

What do you mean by ‘a cork lid’?
