I believe it’s drier, and thus doesn’t steam up and fry me. It may also be packed with more care and precision.

Forgot to add, the better pack, the drier tobacco,”airing out or breathing” makes smoking easier. There seems to be less effort to keep pipe lit. Less relights cooler smoke.

I had CH in a cob for about 3 days. It smoked fine. I think tobacco packed in pipe dries rather slowly. With heater going now days, 20 min will give crispy ribbons.

I don't normally do it but I have some aged 1792 that it works very well on.

For Gawith flakes you need to pack the year before!

I haven't found a blend that didn't work packed the night before; it's just a habit with me, not every night, but often. The drying is sometimes beneficial, for a more even burn and fewer relights, and I haven't encountered a blend where it is a problem. Also, there is the luxury of being able to pick up a pipe and light it, no muss, no fuss. Also, not having to make the decision on pipe and blend is easier.
