Liverwurst Is Getting Bad Rep!

Apparently, liverwurst was the cause of listeria outbreak at Boar's Head. So they are discontinuing the liverwurst forever! As a organ meat lover, liver is always on the top of my choice. Sometimes, cow small intestine or lung, maybe heart or stomach. If I knew it was gonna be discontinued, I would have sampled some. Oh well, it's too late to say "I would have eaten it!"

Scary thought: The Boar's Head plant that put out the contaminated stuff was in such bad shape that it wasn't cost effective to clean it / get rid of the rodents / etc., so they shut it down entirely and wrote it off.

Heard listeria outbreak in such a facility is almost impossible to totally get rid of. They just stick around in places people can't reach. So that plant is done for. Even some equipments can't be cleaned unless they can be completely broken down to be cleaned.

Around Oktoberfest I look forward to imports of liverwurst from Germany.
Nothing like toast slathered with liverwurst or foie gras for brekkie.

Unfortunately listeria, salmonella and other bugs like E. coli are real threats unless factories have absolutely strict hygienic standards.

Boarshead ain’t the only game in town making liverwurst where I’m at! Though I do prefer braunschwagger if I had the choice. I’m glad Wisconsin has plenty of producers making good meats!

I love braunschwagger. I'm an offal fan in general. Kidneys are my favorite.

I usually don’t eat that stuff too much anymore due to health issues but every few years I love having a braunschwagger sandwich on rye with raw onions, butter, and mustard

About once a year I would make a few liverwurst/mustard on rye sandwiches. Considering board head was supposed to be a premium brand (and the one I always liked!) it’s a bummer. I imagine it will be a while before I jump back in that ship again.

Search around your local area. Maybe there’s a butcher that makes it

Sloppy and filthy processing of the liverwurst caused the problem. Save a few bucks, kill a few people doing it. Seems fair, wouldn’t you agree?
Used to like liverwurst and braunschweiger but haven’t eaten either in decades. There are other makers besides Boarshead.
