Watch how a Man treats animals, and people society says don't matter.
I agree Brad. While my grandfather was speaking primarily to the treatment of domesticated animals kept by man for work & companionship, the bigger measure is how man as a society treats the wild animals (& wildlife) of the planet. As a result of what happened to the bison of the Great Plains the conservation & protection of wild animals & wildlife really began in this country with the establishment of Yellowstone National Park in 1872. It is unfortunate today however that most of society feels that wild animals should be restricted to national parks & sanctuaries or in a zoo.

Talk about life lessons! Here's one instinct Jesse should have followed:
"Bob Ford I don't trust; I think he is a sneak; but Charlie Ford is as true as steel." --Jesse James as quoted in Frank Triplett's book published in 1882.

johhnyreb, thanks for the scholarship on the quote often attributed to Twain.
Here's one of my favorite quotes, which occurs to me from time to time, since I have been to this place several times.
“There will come a time when you believe everything is finished; that will be the beginning. ”

― Louis L'Amour

Thanks for the Louis L'Amour quote, mso. I'm going to keep that one!
There was another life lesson my grandfather instilled in me frequently from the time I was about 6 yrs old & on. By the time I was about 14-15 he knew he could get a good days worth of work out of me "taking care of my own", but he wasn't going to stop me from walking to town of a night:
"When it comes to life & taking care of your own, having fun is second."

I'm suspicious of people who don't like dogs but I trust a dog when it doesn't like a person. Bill Murray

"If you start to get frustrated, walk away and cool down." My dad, on doing car maintenance/repair. And since the old jeep keeps me pretty frustrated, I happen to employ that wisdom quite a lot.
Fortunately he was around to show me how to change the water pump, most recently (he lives in Florida).

Your chance at Happines = 1/the level of complexity of your life.
It doesn't mean complex lives aren't happy ones, just that it is harder to achieve happiness. A simple life allows for a greater chance at happiness. A more famous version of this is Occam's Razor or K.I.S.S (Keep it simple stupid). These have been words I live by.

“If you really knew how dirty and raggedy the Old West was, you wouldn’t want any part of it.” – Tom Horn, to a jailhouse visitor just a few days before he was hung in 1903.
