Recently I was invited over to my neighbours house for a smoke and conversation. I brought over all my cool pipe gear (which dazzled him, a cigar smoker), but when it came time to empty the bowls I realized I don't have an ashtray. I usually smoke my pipe outdoors and empty ashes just in the dirt.

Well I need to find something better now, to empty ashes in and to break up flakes as well.
What do you have?

A number of years ago, I bought a Pirate ashtray from a shop in St Augustine, FL. That is a common theme for tourist in that town. While it is not built for pipes, I put a cork knocker in it and it satisfies my needs.

Ashtray? Why the heck would I need one of those when I vacuum the floors anyway? You guys are weird.

Here
I have a shot glass with a wider flared top sitting on my desk. The opening is wider than the outside diameter of most of my pipes and wider than the bore diameter of all of them.
I dump ash into it. When full and cool, it is emptied into the ziplock bag in my trash can. Between smokes, the top of the shot glass is covered with a matchbook.
This system, along with an exhaust fan when smoking, has kept my smoking room tolerable to SWMBO and kept the smell from drifting through the rest of the house.

I've discovered something new from this thread... according to at least two photos, wasp and hornet spray is a pipe smoking accessory. Who would have thought?

My first real job, when I was eleven, was cleaning up at Woody's Barber Shop, and he had these kind of ashtrays in the standing type. I've got two of each from EBay.

I f'ing give up. I used to put pics up all the time.

I just use one of these Butt Buckets. It has a hole in the middle for dousing cigarettes, but I just drop my matches in and dump my ashes in it. Top unscrews for easy emptying. It's cheap, but it serves the purpose I use it for. I just don't see the point in a nicer ash tray. As for a cork knocker, I just tap the pipe on my palm. A little ash and dottle in my hand doesn't hurt me. And I suppose if I really wanted, a cork could easily be added.

Mike: it is vintage, very heavy . my wife insisted that I have a “nice” looking ashtray if I was going to leave it out in the living room area, she hated the cheap POS I had before. It’s the one time her persnicketyness benefited me.
Yohanan nice bucket, very functional. that would NOT fly with my wifey.

I got mine because I can also use it with the occasional cigar.

BTW alan73, that is a nice ashtray, even if it's not as fancy as yohanan's.

I thought I was the only one who had to keep a can of wasp killer by my side as I smoked. I laughed out loud when I saw that.
