May join in on the next go round. My whittlin' is a lot rusty. Wish I had access to lathes such as some of you fine gentlemen have. I also need to source some brass shell casings or copper pipe caps. Was playing around today and trying to get my whittlin' back up to par. Can basswood be used without a brass/copper cap? I would think so, but there are more people with more experience here than myself.

Sure Revs, you can use about any wood if it had a metal cap on it. Some woods, such as briar, can be used "nekked".

The brass cap improves the appearance mostly, in my opinion. If your tamper catches fire, you are really using it wrong. Harder woods work better if you don't have a cap. Technically basswood is in the hardwood category, but it is fairly soft. But carvers love basswood, since it is so easy to work with. Feel free to jump on it. We have all skill levels, types of carvers / turners and lots of different materials. As long as you post a picture of your tamper before I get home from work next monday night, when the trade ends.
Winton.

I need to get one of these nifty tampers. I find my Czech tool can get in the way sometimes.

Not sure I'll be in on this one. Work has me out of town all week. Maybe we can get a holiday tamper swap together for the holidays. Need to dust off my carving a little more. Still rusty.

It's coming together. Some nice work being shown. I actually use solid copper when I make a tamp end out of the stuff. Make it from copper rod. Looks good and adds some heft to the tamper. Should take on a patina with a little time.

I agree totally winton. I prefer my hardwood tampers bare wood on the end especially when I'm using it with my meer.

Smokindawg, If I had a metal lathe, I probably would make the caps myself also. But, can't justify a new expensive tool at this stage.

I hear that Winton. Wife thought the same thing when I just made the purchase of my bigger mill/drill machine last Saturday. But I can sell the smaller one with vice and tooling to help pay for the bigger one.
I also got a good deal on my metal lathe and was happy to get it.

Thanks fellas! Photoman the Color is the natural tropical hardwood only. I finished it with extra virgin olive oil.

These are the five tampers to choose from for whomever gets me in the trade tomorrow. The first two are hickory and the last three are hardwood probably an oak. I spent the most time carving the owl. Whichever tamper is chosen, I hope it is enjoyed. They're all what I would describe as rustic; I don't have the talent of bentmike!

For the pipes that you just can't get rid of the ghost in. Use a ghost in them. Not part of the trade. Just getting my skills back. Maybe next time. It needs color.
Ok, that turned out dark and small. Let me play around with it and get it brighter and bigger.
