Latakia and Metallic Taste

I’ve recently started exploring Latakia blends. Starting with Lancer Slices and PS EnglishLuxury. I instantly fell in love with the pine tar aroma and flavor. My oh my what a pleasure.
unfortunately, there’s an annoying side affect. Every time I smoke it I get a metallic taste that sit on my tongue for a couple hours afterward. The Lancer Slices do it worse than the English Luxury, which is super unfortunate because the Slices are my favorite of the two.
Any advice on how to prevent this or why it’s happening is greatly appreciated

no idea. And I don't talk about it but latakia heavy blends give me a mild numbness in the back of my throat that reminds me of something I shouldn't talk about here and also highly recommend avoiding even if the wild eyed stranger offering it to you seems nice.
Oh and you're adorable (I assume that any animal otherwise then my cat in a profile pic is actually the poster, it's just more fun then the truth).

Have you tried something mild? I haven't had those two to know how lat heavy they are. Also it might be some strange body chemistry thing. Try Peterson Early Morning Pipe or similarly mild blend to see how you react.

May have something to do with whatever you’ve eaten or drank prior to smoking. Or your body chemistry. Once in a great while I get odd tastes from smoking tobacco. But it’s not often.

I sometimes listen to Metallica while smoking Latakia…

Maybe the speed your smoking it? I love latakia and often smoke way too fast. For me, an odd taste is reminder to slow down. But the taste didn't linger. Does the funky taste start while smoking or only after your done?

No problem. It’s never happened to me before, but I’ve heard of others having that happen. Maybe that’ll take care of it.

Wow, just as I started to experience this a few weeks ago, I never thought I’d see someone so suddenly going through the same thing here.

For me, I think what set this off, I was rushing a smoke, puffing away like a train, a lot, that I irritated the roof of my mouth, just above my top teeth. This area for the past few weeks has been a little tender.

So a few days later after my big pipe rush, train smoking, I started to noticed a metallic, charcoal/carbon like tangy taste on the roof of my mouth, but it seemed more prominent with Latakias.

Yesterday I smoked some WCC Rouxgaroux, and for the first few puffs, this taste, was very lightly noticeable, but soon went away.

Hmm, all I can think is I smoked to hard and heavy, irritated my mouth, and it’s going to take some time, but two weeks later I still get this with Latakia blends.

I thought yesterday I would lay off the pipe for one month to let my mouth heal, figuring that should be long enough, but ohhh one month..., ahhh

Latakia blends turn "alkaline" with fast puffing, actually everything does but the Latakia is "double smoked" (first in the process adding flavor and second when you burn it in your pipe) so there's extra alkalinity when you start smoking hot and sucking back ash instead of the aromatic steam that gives smoke its flavor.

I am still getting this taste with other blends, I must of really irritated my mouth, just a few puffs off a VaPer and my mouth started feeling irritated last night.

Ahhh this is depressing, I’m holding off till the end of the month, and give my mouth a long rest, it seems to need it.

Most of the bad aftertastes I've had have come from over flavored aromatics; those can linger and be pretty unpleasant. I've never experienced it with Latakia, Perique, or any condiment tobaccos, even thought some categorize Lat as an aromatic in its own right. I don't remember ever tasting a metallic flavor. So it could be a body chemistry effect.

This isn’t from a bad tabac taste from bad tabac, the roof of my mouth, the skin is slightly raw/irritated from smoking to hard is all.

I just need to be patient and let it heal....

I’m on 3 weeks now, September 1st I’ll be back after a month rest.

Is this post too old? Well... I also love Latakia blends and I get a taste in my mouth that could be similar to the one you're describing, or maybe not... sometimes when I smoke more than 3 bowls per day (I can smoke up to 10 bowls on a day off) my mouth simply starts tasting bad... I think it's the tar and maybe some ash too. I wash my teeth 3 or more times those days and try to eat something and drink some water. Tar accumulates and I think that taste is simply the tar, it's just my opinion though.
