It’s beautiful and you’ll love the scenery, but desert suns are dangerous, hats notwithstanding. I know this isn’t remotely what you’ll be doing but it’s a grim reminder of what can and does happen to the unprepared or unlucky: Lost and out of water, father and daughter found dead in Utah Park - https://abcnews.go.com/amp/US/father-daughter-found-dead-utah-park-triple-digit/story?id=111984258

Hm.

A bit of prep and understanding the body chemistry of exertion in a hot environment is all it takes to be safe.

I went on many hundreds---probably over a thousand---rock-climbing hikes in remote Arizona with temps 110 and up, and also (by chance) on both of Arizona's all-time high record days (120 and 122). I also raced cross country motorcycles and raced motocross. Never once had a heat-related issue.

The main "gotcha" is people don't realize that water alone isn't enough, hydration-wise. Sweat that is replenished by water only creates a mineral imbalance which jacks up your body's "electrical system". Nerves stop working right, and nerves control muscles... when they start going haywire---the imbalance sneaks up on you, too---you are definitely in trouble. (By the time you realize something's happening, getting "right" again takes HOURS)

Meaning drink something like Gatorade, NOT plain water, when out and about in desert heat. Wear a hat, a loose(ish) long-sleeved shirt, keep drinking whether you think you need to or not, and otherwise enjoy yourself.

It's 100% common sense except for the minerals/nerve conduction thing.

Agreed on both posts. I'm still trying to decide exactly what I'll be doing. Apparently there aren't any water refill stations outside of the visitor center and, being from the southeast, I'm not used to the climate. I'm used to humidity beating the hell out of you, so last year when I hit up the Springs Preserve I was in for a rude awakening to what heat exhaustion feels like. It hit me all at once.

I'm still planning to go to the canyon, but I'll likely have 3 plans and adjust accordingly. But if I do the longest hike available, I think I'll have to pass on bringing my SLR if I need to lug around so many necessities. I love the outdoors, but I'm no pack mule.

Valley of Fire is a wonderful & beautiful place. Hopefully it will not be "EXTREME" in October, but it will most likely be warm. There are many shorter hikes you can do in the early hours before it warms up. The Fire Wave is an excellent one to do early, before the crowds, although as a photographer, you may wish to do it a little later for best sun on it, Google Earth can probably help you with angles of light.
Again, there are so many wonderful trails & hikes. The White DOkes Movie Set trail & Hike is fun, with elevation & boulders, and a great Hollywood story.Plus the wild life can also be spectacular. Although at this time of year, I am unsure. It was in January each of the times I have camped there. A GREAT spot for sure.

The above was from part ways down the White Domes (not Dokes) Trail. You can see it continues down towards where the people in the distance are near movie set ( then moves around to right for a full loop. We got down to the set & the dog didn't want to go further, so she & I headed back up the way we came while my beloved wife continued the trail. I had a pipe at truck with dog as we waitedpuffy. Lots to see & as I said MANY great hikes. Below is the stark beauty of area & some of many petroglyphs. You will have a great time.:col:

Can you tell us more about the setup of the Collectors Showcase? I might bring along a few of my toys.
If it's the same as last time I participated there were tables set up where you could display your pipes how you felt like.

Work threw a monkey wrench in my plans last year. This year I'm thinking of either female carvers or American carvers as a theme.

Well now that's a showing! Does everyone go this hard with their displays?

Please Do! The Collectors Showcase is a free, low pressure, non commercial place for collectors to show off whatever they want. Bring however many pipes you’re comfortable traveling with. The tables are on the side of the lounge and you can hang out with them and talk pipes for as long as you want to. Usually people keep their displays up for at least a couple of hours. Let me know if you want to get in early to set up.

It was an awesome display and just what we envisioned for the event!

Dave, I would appreciate getting in early to get set up. Won’t be anything fancy, probably just the rarer Barlings.
