This 2024 Las Vegas International Pipe Show was hands down the best weekend of the year.
Wednesday started off meeting up with a friend and his wife for dinner at the Peppermill with myself and my wife. Really good food and conversation. I dropped the wife off and then went back up to Palace Station to hang out in the hospitality suite for a bit.
Thursday morning I went with my brother to walk around Corn Creek and do some bird watching. Afterwards stopped at the house for lunch and a bit of rest. Then headed back up to the hospitality suite on the 14th Floor to hang out for a while.
Friday afternoon I packed up my Sam Adebayo collection and headed to Palace Station to help Brian and Dave set up for the show. Once we had the ballroom and lounge ready I set up my Adebayo display. At 4PM the doors opened for the show goers to come into the lounge and see the collections, have a drink, and have a pipe. Registration was come as you please, which seemed to make things easier. A lot of people checked out my Adebayo collection and complimented me on it. Eventually I went down to the casino to get something to eat. Then it was back up to the 14th Floor and the hospitality suite to hang out a bit more.
Saturday the doors opened at 10AM and there was a decent sized line waiting to get in to the show. I had planned out Saturday, so first up was meeting Bruno Nuettens and buying one of his mini-Bing’s. I got a dark stain sandblasted one with a copper band. Then it was on to Kevin Foster’s table. He posted a beautiful acorn with a burnt orange stem he made for the Instagram Pipe Carvers Club September challenge of fall themed pipe. Kevin was really nice and appreciative of the compliments I gave him on his pipes and for buying the one pipe. Up next it was to an industry table. Someone had texted me before the show started that they had something I might be interested in. It turned out to be a Sam Adebayo light stain sandblasted billiard with horn stem from this person’s personal collection. They were thinning the herd and after seeing my Adebayo collection the night before decided to give me first dibs on it. Of course I bought it and thanked them for thinking of me. From there it was off to CMartin Pipes to see Chris Mattioda. He posted the pipes he was bringing on Instagram before the show and I loved everything he was bringing. I really wanted a light stained Lovat he made, but it turns out another collector bought it before the show started. I decided on a nice dark stained sandblasted Dublin with silver ring accent. A fantastic piece! Then it was off to see Dr Bob and pay for the two commission pieces he made before the show. They were exactly what I wanted and looked spectacular. After thanking Dr Bob it was off to Sutliff’s table to get some Flannel Coffee and Maple Shadows II. By then I was a bit tired, so it was off to the lounge for some water and sitting time. I found Pylorns (James Foster) and we talked about what we’d purchased so far. Refreshed, it was off to Briarworks/Prevost/Redmond table. Pete had a gorgeous sandblasted long shank Dublin sitter on the table. I had commented on Instagram the week before that it was the next pipe of Pete’s I was after. When I told him I had to buy it he mentioned he made it hoping to entice me to buy it. I think I’m in trouble now
. I went down to the casino for lunch. Then it was back up to the lounge to hang out until the dinner/award show. The dinner was a nice buffet. The games were entertaining. Congratulations to Brad Pohlmann for best pipe in show and Nate King for best hobbyist display. After the dinner I went home to recoup for Sunday.
Sunday the doors opened to show goers at 9AM, an hour earlier than usual. I think it ended up being a good idea. I went to the lounge first. Then I went to the Briarworks table to grab one of their Moonshine Hillbilly pipes. I got a medium dark stain sandblasted one with a black stem. I also brought a Dublin nose warmer Pete made that I want to make a three pipe set of. Pete took pics of the pipe to get an idea of the size and said to get with him when I’m ready. After that it was back to the lounge to hang out with Johnathan and Matt from the LA pipe club. Then we headed off to see Jon David Cole and Quinn at the Country Squire table. I ended up buying one of the Squire mugs. From there we walked around a bit more and ended up at Nat Rose’s table where I found a Lovat calling my name. After hem hawing a bit I decided to pull the trigger. Nate was very thankful. The pipe has a top notch sandblast on it. Drilling is spot on. Draw is effortless. I highly recommend looking into Nate’s work if you collect artisan pipes. From there it was back to the lounge for more sitting and talking with other show goers. Eventually 3PM came around and the show was officially closed. Then came 4PM and we were encouraged to go to the 14th floor. I headed home to have dinner and drop off a few things. I went back to the hospitality suite a bit later and hung out with SubCon, Quinn, Carmette Pipes, Ray McDonald and a few others. At 9PM I said goodbyes and headed back to the house.
It was an exhausting weekend that came and went far too quickly. I had the time of my life. It was so good to get out of my shell and get active and interactive more than usual. The pipe community truly is the best.
Brian announced at the show that they’ve signed contracts for both 2025 and 2026. The dates for 2025 are October 24th-26th. I can’t wait for next year’s show!
