I prefer Lane Limited Ready Rubbed over Sutliffs match. From Jiminks reviews on it I decided to buy 4 ounces of it which was my fault because I should have just bought an ounce to try it. Found it very unpleasant to smoke. The cut was like little hard pebbles and it was impossible to keep lit. The room note was like a typical aromatic. I'd have to admit there was a batch that Lane put out that was bad, loaded with PG and the casing was weird, but the last 5 or 6 tubs I smoked was close, very close to the Edgeworth that Lane made. I still go by Jiminks reviews though. This one was just strange because the blends that I try are based on his reviews. I am going to try it again though because there is a strong possibility that I had gotten some old left out tobacco. It wouldn't be the first time I got dry stale bulk tobacco from pipesandcigars. They send me dried up, flavorless Peter Stokkebye Sambuca pipe tobacco,,,,twice. After I complained and explained how the tobacco was they sent me 4 more ounces of the SAME BATCH! So I had 8 ounces of cardboard that was unsmokable, I even tried to rehydrate it, what a mess LOL.

I heard Lane changed LLRR at some point after I smoked and reviewed it. Haven't tried it lately. I still think the Sutliff Match is closer because there's too much chocolate in the Lane for it to be a close match, unless they changed that in the past couple of years. Anyway, when I smoke the Sutliff version, I gravity feed the tobacco and don't tamp down. It does require a few more relights than your average blend because of the cut, but it's never bothered me. I enjoy the molasses enough to make the small effort it takes.

Hi Jiminks, I recently tried Sutliffs Ready Rubbed again. I ended up buying a total of 7 ounces LOL! Sir, that stuff is Delicious! When I first tried it two years ago I guess, it must have been a bad batch made up or something, because the stuff I have now is awesome. I actually still have three tubs of Lane's Ready Rubbed in my cellar and haven't even opened one yet. I've been smoking Sutliffs and PA..:) I've been really digging Sutliffs Model and Briggs Matches as well.

Considering MacBarens Golden Extra was introduced almost 70 years ago and the Edgeworth matches were introduced far more recently, wouldn't that make Golden Extra the codger blend? ?
not really. A lot of older blends aren't considered codger blends. I think if you can imagine a man that wears overalls regularly and not just because of his work smoking that blend it's codger blend. I think that's how it's measured. Which is actually more specific and easier to verify then how we determine what's a mountain and what's just a lump on a mountain.

Ok, so I guess it is just more fair to say that Golden Extra is merely less adulterated with casings and topping as in blends most of the forum would classify as “codger” blends.
But really, didn’t you guys know what I was talking about before?
Yes, I truly believe everyone here knew exactly what you meant.

**edit - Okay, I can only speak for myself. I knew what you meant.

Yeh, I remember this thread... the stress of trying to convey something simple with these guys on my ass. You know, we have a shit-kicker truck stop where one can buy five packs of Montecristo Whites between a huge display of Red Man and tractor grease... but I would not classify Montecristo White cigars as a truck stop cigar.

Also, didn’t realize this thread was bumped from a year ago. Here I go drudging up the past!
It's still a viable post. Whenever someone asks for a suggestion for a burley, and the first six suggestions are Carter Hall, Prince Albert, n SWR, etc... drives me freakin' nuts, ha ha. To me, it is up there with someone asking for a suggestion for a Virginia, and the first few suggestions are RYOs... go f&%$ yourself. Ha ha.

I was unaware that the Model and Briggs match blends were still in production. I stocked up on Briggs a long time ago, but didn't on Model. Too bad I'm not adding to my cellar any more.

I know this is an old discussion, but I smoke a lot of codger burleys and LLRR is probably at the top of that list.

I didn't smoke a pipe when the original Edgeworth was around, but for my 2 cents, LLRR is better than the Sutliff Match. It's interesting that Jim says he gets more chocolate in the LLRR, because for me it's the exact opposite. The Sutliff Match is just too chocolatey for my tastes, not to say I don't like it, I have 2 lbs in the cellar.

Golden Extra is light and pleasant, but not as satisfying to me as LLRR or Granger.

Obviously was wrong about that one, my local guy wasnt getting the little pouches anymore and said it was gone. Months later found that it moved production and the larger tubs were starting to show up more. I haven’t picked up any of it in a while.
