I have a young 32yo coworker who quit pipe smoking. He's been smoking anything and everything since he was 18 and just realized he is having a hard time breathing during his workouts. He's trying to get healthy again and then may come back to the pipe.
I feel the same way, I'm 31 and smoked anything and everything sense I was a pre teen, before 13. I'm not proud of my past smoking and I can feel it's taking its toll on my lungs. I just wish I had found pipes sooner and more knowledgeable smokers who could school me. I mean I was inhaling cigars at a very young age. The pipe came to me while I was searching for a better way to enjoy tobacco because after awhile I noticed i smoked just to kill time. I felt it was time for a change and went in full force. I still smoke cigs, cigars and cannabis to a lesser degree but my pipe is my go to with cannabis a close seconed.

I just realized I've known more people who've quit hard drugs then people who quit pipe smoking. Now I've seen people slowly let go of it or not really ever fully get into it. But actually intentionally stop not many. I've known more pipe smokers then people that had problems with other things that they quit. I guess pipes are just better then that other junk.

I was a cigar smoker for 30 years before I bought my first pipe on a whim. Never more than a one or two cigar per week guy, I soon found myself piping daily. The pipe has become my favorite method for tobacco smoking and I’ve been smoking about three bowls a day for a couple years now. I’ve recently noticed some tenderness in my gums and wondered if the pipe smoking might be the cause. I have cut back to one bowl a day but can’t see myself quitting altogether as I simply love it too much to do so now, not to mention the rather large collection of briars and tobacco I’ve amassed.

Maybe you should check with your dentist or doctor. That doesn't sound like a pipe caused problem to me. Usually, if the pipe smoker has a problem it's with tongue bite or irritation in the roof of the mouth. puffy

I gave up Pipe smoking when my late Wife was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer that spread to her lungs and I had to help her stop smoking so I gave up the pipe, She lived for 5 years after being diagnosed so I went nearly 5 years without bowlful, my whole collection was boxed up and my stock of tobaccos where sealed up. The day of her funeral was the day I restarted, this was 4 years ago. I am now engaged and now living happily with my Fiancé and enjoying my pipe more than ever,

Suddenly my throat is irritated after a year and a half of smoking just wondering if it might be pipe related or it's unrelated. I love smoking so much and invested quite a bit in it too. I would hate to have to give up so soon after discovering it lol.
Not sure what you mean by irritated but I do have, as my ENT put it while shoving a camera wire down my nose and throat, "globus sensation" which is a tightness of a muscle that goes around the trachea and esophagus. It can get tight and feel like a lump in your throat or like someone has their hands around your neck without the difficulty breathing. I've noticed that when I use any sort of caffeine or nicotine product (my FiL recently got me hooked on Zyn and Rogue pouches) that it heightens the feeling in my throat. Because of this, I no longer drink caffeine but always make room for my pipe, I don't think I could live without it.

Could be the pipe but I agree check with the dentist or doctor. I take the thought it sucks to find out you could have fixed a problem earlier.

I have the opposite situation. I got practically all my friends hooked on smoking a pipe) But it's worth saying that most of them quit cigarettes and switched completely to a pipe. They say their health has improved. I never smoked cigarettes, started smoking a pipe and I liked it a lot. I've been a pipe smoker for eight years now.

All my personal friends that smoked pipes have quit. I think it was because of life-style decisions: because smoking a pipe takes commitment and because smoking indoors became more unacceptable once they started raising their families.

I don't know anyone personally that smoked a pipe and quit.
My relatives and friends that smoked a pipe never quit. They passed(non-smoke related).
I did meet a gentleman at an event who immediately recognized my 314 Peterson. By time I met him it had been many years since he had to put down the pipe(health reasons).
He was the only person that I met in 27 years that had ever smoked a pipe.
When you're looking down the barrel of age 72 it's a Strange New World. :sher:

Get a dog, take him for a long walk everyday, bring a cob filled with your favourite. This is how I’ve gone from once or twice a week to almost everyday. The potential negatives from smoking are offset by the exercise you get from walking him! Maybe?!?!
I have the same strategy and mindset. Who cares if it is bullshit if I am enjoying it this much.

I admire that you quit for your wife. I also admire that you were able to return to what you like doing after that experience.

I quit for 20 years so to be a good influence on my kids. Now they are adults, and can make their own decisions. I am back and enjoying it immensely.

Yes, almost everyone I know that tried the pipe for awhile and quit shortly after. One of my friends lasted an entire year. He gave my pipes back, all three had broken shanks. I don’t even bother trying to get people interested in pipes anymore, it’s too much “work” for most people.

I've cut down since my eyes are so sensitive. I've unfortunately been smoking alot of blue dunhills. Easier to keep smoke out of my eyes. Might need to invest in some church wardens!
Which BTW, off topic, but dunhill pipe tobacco may be gone. But their cigarettes are still top shelf. Taste like high quality virginia

People I know who give up smoking pipes feel that it is too much trouble and too difficult to learn the skill.

The more they want to taste the flavor of the tobacco, the faster they will smoke. Eventually lead to mouth burns.

As I had written earlier, I quit smoking pipes for over 20 years and just started smoking again at the beginning of this year. One of my daughters came over to the house shortly after I had been outside smoking my pipe. She gave me a big hug as normal, and she said "Oh, I can smell your tobacco. It brings back fond memories of my childhood!" I got four or five more hugs before she left, just so she could smell the familiar aroma of my Capstan Blue flake. Her mother had always complained about me smelling like smoke, I never thought that might be a fond memory for my children!
