"you need to go with a Kindle Fire or other tablet if you want color. then you sacrifice readability outside in the daytime."
True -- and this is played up a lot in commercials for the Kindle PaperWhite. But I'd just encourage you to ask yourself how often you're actually wanting to read books outside in direct sunlight. If this is more than once a year during your vacation, then the B/W PaperWhite is, IMO, absolutely the best option. Extremely readable -- and easy on the eyes -- under any conditions.
It's almost never mentioned, but the PaperWhite is also able to do rudimentary Web surfing. It's slow and awkward, but it can be useful for looking up something quickly on Wikipedia, say, while you're reading. (If you have a PaperWhite and haven't used this feature, it's under Experimental in the drop-down settings menu on the Home screen. Which tells you that Amazon is still -- after six years -- treating this like a very rough beta.)
But if you want full-color, high-resolution photos/graphics -- if you think you might read a lot of magazines or children's books or books with color photos -- then I'd steer you toward either a Kindle Fire HDX or an iPad Mini with Retina. The Kindle Fire HDX's display is currently the best on the tablet market. But the iPad Mini is overall a lighter, more powerful device. But, honestly, either one will do the job for you. Just a question of whose ecosystem you prefer (Apple or Amazon), who has more of the content you're interested in, and which one "feels" right for you.

I got no dog in the fight.. my Kindle Fire HD is pretty much worthless outside during the day. direct sunlight or not. It' great for lite surfing, streaming HD video from Prime and YouTube (one cable will move it from the Fire to your big flat screen TV). Reading inside, on the Fire, isn't so bad except for the weight. As a pipe/cigar smoker and retired I spend a considerable time on my covered patio so the move to the Paperwhite. Beautiful to read inside or out, weighs nothing and the battery power is excellent. I can adjust text size and font and have different shades of background.
Paperwhite is for reading eBooks. (black and white)

Fire is for surfing, forums, streaming content to watch. (full color and awesome screen)

Acer Netbook is for computer stuff that requires a lot of keying or buying stuff online, etc.. from the couch.

Lenovo Laptop hasn't been fired up in a long time..

Lenovo Desktop gets fired up occasionally to backup pictures and music from the Fire and Acer. (in addition to the cloud)
Paperwhite = $119

Fire HDX = #229 (includes 30 days of Prime, Prime is now $99 a year and IMO a great deal)

iPad Mini - $399
as always everyone's mileage will vary.

I just received a Kindle Paper White (with the advertisements) and really like it MUCH better than my older first gen Kindle. Battery life with the back light on always is fantastic! Love how I can press-and-hold on any word on a page and get the dictionary definition (helps when reading Sherlock Holmes as it uses many old English terms).
I have a laptop for work, and a laptop for play like reading this forum.
Agree with dochudson, and "Use the right tool for the job" as my grandfather never said to me.

I finally got a Paperwhite as well. Love it. Perfect for just reading books which is all I am interested in, do not need tablet functions. The Paperwhite is living up to its recommendations!
I've downloaded about twenty five books so far, mostly for leisure reading (zombie fiction and space opera) but also downloaded Fred Hannah's book (the most expensive at $9.99) and From the Ashes, the History of Falcon Pipes. I think I might have spent maybe fifty bucks so far - for twenty five books!! Far cheaper than Nook offerings.
The wife went with Nook and ended up with their version of the Paperwhite. Functionality is about the same, can be read in full daylight, etc. but overall I am more pleased with the Kindle.

I work part time in a pawn shop. Have picked up a few of both for around the $10 mark.
Root them, flash a cyanogen mod to them, and load the Google pack.
They work far better and faster as a pure android platform, and the "catch all" readers you can download free are fully functional across all formats.

doc - A couple books a week. They will last awhile, for sure. I was just overly psyched at seeing sets of seven or nine books for ninety nine cents or a trilogy for five bucks.
portascat - I have a Nook tablet that I purchased an Android chip from Amazon. Turned the Nook into a fully functional Android tablet. I just never used it much for that.
