Red Virginia plug.

I can’t say it’s complex, but it is very good. Tang, fermented maltiness, and breadiness like you would expect. The sweetness is always there, but a bit subdued. There’s some fruitiness, too, but dried fruit that’s in the background and not very bright. In the second half of the bowl a brown sugar taste becomes noticeable, which contrasts nicely with the fermented flavor.

There’s a surprising burley-like edge/spiciness to it that I feel in the back of my throat and on the retrohale. FWIW, to me it’s a plus as it adds a bit of zest. Because of that edge, this reminds more of CRF than it does of CC.

There’s no bite, and is very tolerant of over puffing. A lot of TR reviews mentions difficulty in getting it lit and staying lit. I had the opposite experience. Out of the pouch it was fairly dry. With a rough cube cut and ~ 40 minutes of dry time, it lit very easily and stayed that way with minimal relights.

It’s kind of hard to believe that KBV makes (or has made) 4 different red Virginia plugs. This lacks the vinegar in Byronic Hiro (which is probably a good thing), but isn’t nearly as sweet and fruity. Somewhere in another forum I saw Ken post about dipping JS in rum, which I’ll definitely be trying. That being said, it’s plenty good on its own. I have yet to try Tavern Bar or Kraken Plug (BH with rum), so I can’t make any comparisons to those.

I think somehow he made an arrangement with Mac Baren to send him the uncut corners of Navy Flake, or something to that extent. He works out of his basement --and no, he doesn't have hydraulic plug presses in his garage. It's inevitable that lots of mystique gets built up when there's an (intentional) vacuum of knowledge, but there you have it.

Didn’t that one used to say on the site that it was made by a third party?

he’s never been shy about the fact he isn’t making these from scratch, and that he’s combining or somehow processing other commercial blends. His website indicates if a blend is made in a factory. So there’s no intentional vacuum of knowledge on his part. It’s entirely possible there’s an unintentional vacuum of knowledge on the part of some third party commentators.

Speaking of Mac Baren Navy Flake, his Yoshimi’s Scented Plug tastes very similar to Navy Flake. It would be on brand for him to take pieces of it from Mac Baren, process it some way and then sell it.

I've known Jeramy for years. He's an obfuscator and all-around bullshitter. Intentional vacuum of knowledge is his speciality.

Are you certain? His mailing address is what appears to be a warehouse in Collierville, TN.

If I had a business in my basement I certainly wouldn't be putting my home address on outgoing correspondence and letting the world know where I lived. He lives in Cordova TN.
Who is Jeramy?
Jeramy is the first name of the individual who created and runs Ken Byron Ventures. If he doesn't make his (full) name available publicly then neither will I, for obvious reasons.

Through casual forum reading and seeing the VPC interview, etc., I’ve been well aware, from well before I ever purchased anything from them, that KBV doesn’t manufacture anything. As my research style is best described as “lazy,” and my intelligence level as “top of the bell,” I assume this is common knowledge among the type of pipe smoker who would ever consider trying some of their blends. In other words, this info is out there and has been for a while. If KBV is trying to masquerade as a true manufacturer, they’ve been doing a terrible job of it.

In any event, it sounds like you guys aren’t fans. Noted

I will also add that the recently pointed-out mysterious provenance of Jupiter Slices really pushes it from “very good” to “outstanding”.

I've enjoyed most everything I've gotten from KBV, but I've noticed a certain amount of "hate" regarding how his blends originate. I don't necessarily understand it, but each their own.

Regarding the OP, I have some Jupiter Slices in the cellar but haven't tried any yet. Seems like it will be enjoyable.

When his IG page existed a few years back one of the batches of Byronic Slices was covered in a white substance in relatively quick time. People brought it up, and he laughed at them as his initial response when people were talking about a potential mold problem.

I didn’t care for the blends all that much to begin with but that response and terrible site updates made me stop buying. I had a bag of one of those batches laughed at.

I don't have IG so I don't know about any of that. But I do agree that he could have handled that better. sorry for your bad experience.

Honestly I'm not even sure when he updates his site or how often. I just check it a couple times a week and haven't had any problems with it, though I have missed out on a couple things I wish I wouldn't have.

A friend sent me an order from Ken Byron. I told my friend that I'm not a virginia fan, I smoke mainly burleys. So he ordered Byronic Hiro, Jupiter slices/plug and Ravens eye and had it sent directly to me. I immediately transferred them into Mason jars and let them age for a few months. All I can say is I am so grateful he did that because BH and JS are fantastic! I slice them very thin and let them dry out and rub them out very good. This tobacco is a tobacco that stays lit and smolders in the pipe for two hours. These are definitely after supper relaxing in front of the TV smokes.
