Internet forums are no place for opinions! Just the facts ma'am.
Sorry for being such a smart-@ss tonite, I'm celebrating a promotion and the single malt might be getting the best of me.

It is a pipe. Dont care what it is made out of within reason. Put tobacco in the big hole. Set it on fire. Put mouth on small hole and puff. If you enjoy it you are doing it right. If you are not enjoying it stop. That is exactly how complicated it is. I have listed the big secret, everyone is welcome.

I don't see what there is to get worked up over. People like what they like for their own reasons. Sharing of opinions is like learning from each other.

You might see things in a different way which can make you rethink your original opinion :puffy:

Dave, did you read the title to the thread" One guy's opinion" I thought I was pretty clear on that point and no I did not do a scientific experiment to produce my OPINION.
In regards to my smoking a cob, I went to my local b/m a few weeks ago to pick a pipe I had in the shop and picked up a MM Legend. I kept reading how much people liked them and my only experience with a cob was a long time ago and I am sure it was not a quality cob. So I proceeded to try a half dozen of my favorite blends over the last few weeks and I did not care for the cob. To me it smoked hot and wet and muted the flavor of the blends. I honestly wanted to like it, because I love a great deal as much as the next guy. I figured I could take it to the beach when I went. While walking my dogs the cob heated up so quickly in the wind that I had to hold it by the stem, and I really thought I was going to have a burn out it got that hot.
Again, this is just my opinion on the subject, it was not intended to put down a cob because as I stated above, there are many reasons to own them. This thread was started because I believe that we can retain more smokers if they start out with a quality briar.

I think Photoman said somethingthat everyone skipped over...it's the tobacco that matters most when starting out. I think in reality though non of it matters to a beginner, what we should really be telling them is don't anticipate an even close to perfect smoke for quite awhile until you find a pipe and tobacco that work for you and you are comfortable with the idea that sometimes it just doesn't work all that great. Constantly learn and improve and experience and you will be rewarded. Improvise, Adapt and Overcome: Semper Gumby.

I hope that a newbie realizes that everyone has a different opinion. We can only recommend to a newbie what to do based on our own experience, which is very subjective.
I started smoking with a low quality drugstore briar and was a little discouraged; then I tried a cob after reading further. It was better. What gave me my first great smoke? An estate briar nose warmer. Later I was recharged with a quality meer. Those two pipes gave me the enjoyment and encouragement that I needed to keep trying.
Pipe smoking is an art, a hobby, a practice, a skill - and depends on individual tastes.

Like the title says, 1 guys opinion. Opinions are like elbows, most people got one or two. I say smoke what you like and like what you smoke and to heck with what anyone else thinks. I personally love my cobs. If someone don't like them don't smoke them, but don't bash them as the red headed step child to a briar. It seams a lot of that goes on around here lately. As far as a new smoker I don't care how much you spend on the pipe or tobacco if you don't know how to load it and until you get the hang of how to smoke it will smoke like crap.

I personally think Cigrmaster is on the money. If you've only got $10 today, and want to try the pipe, I would advise you to wait a while, save some money, and find a good quality briar. I started with drugstore briars, but I was 18, didn't know any better, and had no one to ask. Even if you are on a limited budget, wait a little bit longer. You don't have to rush out and buy that pipe today.

That being said, I got a couple of cobs, and enjoy 'em. I tend to smoke burleys in them; that just seems to work for me. Have no desire to try a good English or Virginia in a cob.

The stems on cobs suck but really other than that they smoke just as well as any pipe . The thing most people overlook as they become seasoned pipe smokers is that we compensate for the blend and the pipe without thinking . No two pipes smoke alike . Hell I could smoke out of paper towel cardboard roll with aluminum foil for the bowl and still get a good smoke . This whole argument is way over done with a bait and switch technique as the opening line is getting to be fatuous . I could personally give a rats as.. if your pipe was carved by a blind monk with a piece of broken glass from the Sistine chapel or a beat up Dr Grabow with yellow Scotch tape holding it together . But I refuse to cast aspersions or use word trickery to provoke what is basicly cyber-bullying . It does not promote the hobby nor does it make me think more of you . If you want to promote high end pipes to new smokers by all means do so the opportunity arises on this website roughly every forty-eight hours . And one more thing there are 7.047 billion people on the planet Iam sure at least one of them will side with me . PS You still coming by on Sunday Iam only posting my opinion .

In Ohio. Just waiting to see how bad the 'perfect storm' really is. Been on few hurricane relief missions. It sounds bad but these are my favorite to do.

Nothing wrong with that dude, for a number of reasons. There's parts of my job that people think I'm totally nuts for enjoying. Well my old job, new one just kind of sucks. Ohio huh...NG? I can't make out patch in your profile pic.

This is the part where I would normally apologize for derailing the thread, but I think this one had run its course at least 20 posts ago.
