The historical transfer of real estate from the lower 50% to the upper 10% is a direct result of real estate taxes. Real estate ownership should have been exempted from taxation by the Constitution.
We learned in law school the power to tax is the power to destroy.

Of course the only ones there in law school were educated enough to be there.

Missouri has low property taxes, low sales taxes, low income taxes, low excise taxes, and ranks dead last in schoolteacher pay.

Nobody likes taxes, but everyone likes good schools, roads, airports and bridges.

Who will pay for them, is the only question.

The taxes you complain about educate children.

If you don’t want to pay them, don’t smoke.

Our mothers were against smoking, remember?
You clearly don’t have to buy tobacco in Australia. This is $2000.00 worth………yes $2000.00 and it’s all tax but rest assured it’s coming to a tobacconist near you soon ?
Tax is good you say……..meh!31A39E53-75B9-4B13-B2BA-C862CD6B2CD5.jpeg

That is ridiculously and punitively too much taxes.

It will severely cut revenue to the Australian government.

Those cans of tobacco are taxed at $2.88 per pound USA taxes plus local excise taxes.

What Australia is doing is driving smoking underground and it will create a black market.

Less than $150 would buy all that fancy, high end tobacco here in Missouri, all taxes paid. $2.88 per pound, plus 10% of wholesale, maybe $5, and the rest profit.

My local independent pipe shop got locally grandfathered into having a smoking table in the shop where people can sit and smoke pipes and cigars. The crowning touch is a note taped to the glass on the front door written in pencil stating that if you enter, you may encounter tobacco smoke. The whole deal is astonishingly human and right-minded. It makes it an even more special place.
It’s great to hear that another tobacconist can carry on a great tradition. Enjoying a wonderful experience with others and be able to show, interact and teach others how to smoke and act. Not everyone is a pipe smoking curmudgeon.

I think the start of 2022 the Michigan law changed so any tobacco bought in or out of state must have a greedy government excise tax applied to its sale. I don't know if all on line retailers charge it though. I buy locally.

Jack Daniels is made in a dry county.

—-
Moore County, where the Jack Daniel's distillery is located, is one of the state's many dry counties. While it is legal to distill the product within the county, it is illegal to purchase it there.

On a state level, Tennessee has imposed stringent requirements. To be labeled as Tennessee whiskey, it is not enough under state law that the whiskey be produced in Tennessee; it must meet quality and production standards. These are the same standards used by Jack Daniel's Distillery, and some other distillers are displeased with the requirements being enshrined into law.[49][50]

On May 13, 2013, Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam signed House Bill 1084, requiring the Lincoln County process to be used for products produced in the state labeling themselves as "Tennessee Whiskey", with a particular exception tailored to exempt Benjamin Prichard's, and including the existing requirements for bourbon.[50][51] As federal law requires statements of origin on labels to be accurate, the Tennessee law effectively gives a firm definition to Tennessee whiskey, requiring Tennessee origin, maple charcoal filtering by the Lincoln County process prior to aging, and the basic requirements of bourbon (at least 51% corn, new oak barrels, charring of the barrels, and limits on alcohol by volume concentration for distillation, aging, and bottling).

Flora Farms produces the best tasting, safest, healthiest, most natural cannabis on this planet!

It’s good for what ails you!

Sole source, Humansville Missouri.

All of the school property taxes paid by the largest cultivator of medical weed on the planet go here.

Humansville R-IV School District is a public school district located in Humansville, MO. It has 322 students in grades PK, K-12 with a student-teacher ratio of 9 to 1. According to state test scores, 37% of students are at least proficient in math and 42% in reading.

The oldest Christian Church in Humansville is here:

The most famous local country star is Tea Goans.

And Missouri Governor Mike Parson owns a farm in the Humansville R IV school district.

He’s been a happily married man for nearly fifty years, doesn’t get his hair cut at the beauty shop, and has never tied up his barber in his basement.:)

Taxes, can work miracles in Humansville , we surely hope and pray.

Half and Half is $3.49 a package and cigarettes less than $20 a carton in Humansville, soon to have the world’s largest cannabis dispensary.
Well, I lived in the moonshine capital of the USA and it also is a dry county. Go figure.

What is so ironic is that Missouri Baptists have, in my lifetime, fought hard against and lost, all these battles against sin:

1. Missouri used to expel pregnant teenage girls from the public schools. This policy created more shotgun weddings, back alley abortions, and hurried trips to Kansas abortion clinics than can be imagined. Cheerleaders used to start rumors that rivals were pregnant to eliminate competition. Then one day, this cruel policy changed.

2. When I was a kid most towns forbid the sale of a deck of playing cards. Then pharmacies could sell them. They bore tax stamps for awhile. We had to travel to Springfield to buy a deck of Bicycles to play pitch.

3. Small towns could not hold proms when I was a teenager, because Baptists objected to dancing. Humansville held it’s first prom in 1975.

4. When I was a kid there was 3.2% non intoxicating beer that was sold only on Sundays at tourist areas, like Pomme De Terre Lake, Lake of the Ozarks, and Table Rock Lake. Otherwise there was no alcohol sales on Sunday. Period.

5. Missouri had draconian blue laws.

6. Getting a Missouri lottery was a twenty year battle against the Missouri Baptist Association.

7. So was riverboat casinos.

8. So was concealed carry. (Why does an honest man need to hide a gun on him?)

Not all that many years ago, the President of the Missouri Baptist Association was caught shoplifting a bottle of cheap wine from a St. Louis grocery store, and his defense was he couldn’t buy any, so theft was his only option.:)

This fall legalized recreational marijuana will be on the ballot in Missouri and it’s expected to pass overwhelmingly, by at least two to one.

That will set up Humansville Missouri to be the marijuana Mecca of the civilized world.

Humansville is building the largest retail dispensary of marijuana in the world and the school board and city fathers are 100% Christians, only, not a Baptist among em’.:)

The honkytonks around Humansville offer the best old time live country music on earth. And you can smoke in all of them, what ever you want to smoke.

I just ordered six pounds of PS Luxury Navy Flake from smoking pipes.com for $239.

No shipping fees.

All excise taxes paid.

In Missouri, smoke em if you got ‘em

Here in New Mexico any pipe tobacco sold is taxed at 25%. 2016 is the date of the tax.
Called a upscale pipe shop in NM a month ago. The man on the phone told me 2 oz of tobacco sold for over $8. I said somehting derogatory about the State and he hung up.

I can save 25% on an out on an out of state order. I realize that local B&M's should be supported. So shame on me.

A man from Tampa opened a pipe/ cigar store in our town. There was no tax on the bulk PS 8 years ago. Before COVID he quit tobacco and was selling pizza and hamburgers. Then he closed his doors.

Is that 25% on the retail selling price or 25% on the wholesale price of the tobacco?

Look, at the largest marijuana cultivation factory on the planet earth, at Humansville Missouri, which (by coincidence?) is the home address of the farm of Governor Mike Parson.

C5F2572E-4ED9-4F9F-8911-BA45F1D8750C.jpegThe empty space in the power substation is for expansion. In the distance are three enormous barns plus more under construction.

Of the fifty states, Mike Parson is the only governor to reject summer lunch programs for children in the Humansville school, and every child there is so poor, they receive free-not reduced price but free-school breakfasts, lunches, plus take home food in backpacks.

Parson defends this.

As we speak the Missouri legislature is in session to lower corporate taxes.

Missouri has the lowest excise taxes on alcohol, gasoline, tobacco, and soon on marijuana in the entire civilized world.

And all our little Humansvilles are literally falling down, with skinny street urchins playing on the pot hole pocked streets. Missouri is dead last in teacher pay in the United States and perhaps the civilized world.

Every well paid employee at the new marijuana factory must have a college degree, which means all of them drive in from Springfield, 45 miles away, or Kansas City, 100 miles away.

But at least you can smoke cheap, in Missouri.

And if you have the right friends, it’s a very good place to have large corporate businesses.:)

If I owned a tobacco shop and the state required me to collect excise tax for them, I wouldn't pay them a dime. I would never apply for a retail license and if they didn't catch it which most states don't I would be a ghost. I was a ghost for 20 years I would roll the dice, put the money into a safety deposit box. If ever audited I do my Mickey the Dunce act and pretend I was a moron bordering on retardation and ask them what is an excise tax. Do I have to pay it to the mfg. Do I have to pay it to the growers? Do I have to pay it to my customers> I just don't understand, can you help me understand as I would never do anything against the law. If they audit you and that is a big if. if you play the game right, you can get away with it for decades.

Just make sure you check to make sure you could never go to jail for it and the worst they can do is fine or penalize you. Ang good accountant or lawyer can advice you on how to do it. don't lay down for these tax slime, you need to find out the most important things that trigger an audit. Home offices, righting off gas for your car, all kinds of mickle and dime shit that raises flags, do your due diligence before you begin,
Also never sign any paperwork that your accountant and attorney have not read. The IRS doesn't need to know you have both waiting in the wings, use the Mickey the Dunce act first. Trust me it works.

Looks like the problem here is crony corruption, not insufficient taxes. If government could stay free of corruption (LOL!), taxes would be very low. Lower than in your God-forsaken state. But Missouri has been an economic, social and genetic backwater since before its inception.

I’m incredibly late to this discussion, but it’s a result of just placing my first online tobacco order in years. Like most of you discovered months ago, there was an excise tax added to the order. At first, I balked. I was ordering 12 tins, totaling $156. And then, on top of that, $42 in excise tax and state tax. Since this was my first experience with excise tax, it felt excessive.

But then I did a little math. At the new price, I was now paying a little over $16/tin. That really isn’t a bad price at all. Were these blends worth that to me? Absolutely.

Maybe I’m just playing games with myself. But it‘s a perspective that, for me, makes these new fees a lot easier to accept.
