So true. The quest for the magical management concept, spread sheet city. Then there's Warren Buffet
who makes his billions (almost) on his inexpensive kitchen table. A few boring principles and grim
determination. Part of an MBA program ought to be working in a dollar store, learning the inventory,
where it is on the shelves, helping the customers, and observing carefully how they behave while stocking
the shelves. That's retail.

Oh brother! Don't get me started! Our new COO has mandated that each department in the hospital establish metrics for all manner of activities. So we spend countless hours in meetings deciding which metrics to follow and how to incorporate these into reports and newsletters. Our whiteboard is full of charts and graphs on everything from sick calls to order processing times.
The one metric nobody seems to be following is if all this effort makes the hospital a safer place for patients. I've done some checking by looking at the frequency of overall safety incidents from ranging from "near misses" to those that did some actual patient harm. I see no change since we started this reporting madness. The number of reports is way up and that's all that seems to count for management. Mission accomplished.

Same here at my hospital Tuold ... 3 weeks of tracking our every move in order to get "lean".
They pay an outside company big bucks to come in and try to .... save money? :crazy:
If upper admin would just actually listen to the people "in the trenches"
we would have conveyed all the same info for free.
Perhaps that is why when my co-worker is headed to the bathroom he always says:
"time to drop the administrators off at the pool"! :rofl:

#cobguy, in my opinion this "lean" business as implemented in pharmacy is 50% crock. What it usually means to me is that when a patient needs something, we don't have it because we just dispensed the one an only item we had in stock. This means calling other hospitals in the area and begging them to let us borrow from their stock. The doctor wants it now, so we have to pay a courier $60 or more to transport it. Lean translates into delays in care and higher costs. Maybe it works in the larger scheme of things in other areas of the hospital, but at my level it's a real pain.I could go on....
The nurses have the "Time to Care" plan to implement.That's where they are tracking all their movements in order to work more efficiently. Maybe that's working for them. Somehow I doubt it.

I went through some other similar waste of time/money projects called Six Sigma.
They used "belts" like Karate to designate your level in the program.
Basically, it meant a lot more time wasted in meetings and conference calls.
When will they learn that someone who's been doing this for 20 years has more insight
than a hired "shirt" or "axeman"?? :roll:
Boeings been trying to get "lean" for at least 15 years. They bring in IE people that never leave, can't do the job they are studying, and don't know anything about an airplane except ordering a drink.

Well, there's the other side.
This little company keeps hiring managers. The few people actually creating revenue see the company profits getting divided among more and more people demanding more and more from them.
Sort of puzzles those of us who don't have a say.

Definitely not considered "lowlifes" here ... we depend on you guys a lot!!
Since the implementation of a new hospital-wide Information System (Cerner) and
with all the change towards Electronic Medical Records our IT guys are very important.
