Paraphrasing Glen Close in "The Natural"...
"You have two lives. The life you learn by and the life you live by thereafter." Maybe he had a few whatevers in his basement, but I can't recall a pipe collector I didn't like. OTOH, would be hilarious if he were a member and piped up on the subject.

I was out of state when my dad died suddenly. My two brothers rushed to Dad's house and cleaned out everything of value, mostly guns and power tools. By the time I got there to clean up the mess they had left and take care of Dad's estate the only thing left were all the slides he took from family vacations, old pictures of our ancestors, the WWII newspaper clipping scrapbook he done as a kid and all the model airplanes he built over the years. As far as I'm concerned, I got the better deal in getting all the family history. I can buy my own tools and guns.

Uh, no thanks. Only if you replaced his picture with one of Darth Vader.
Do you really that Darth Vader would smoke a Calabash? He seems like more of a Bulldog man... or maybe a nose warmer...

"Another way family heirlooms get displaced, kidnapping, in the sense that some old boy will run off

with some gold-digging or flakey woman a few years younger, and she grabs all the family history and

heirlooms, refusing to give them to children, the ex, or anyone else who actually lived with and cared

about the items. The "love interest" eventually kicks off, and no one knows anything about any of the

pillaged family items, and off they go to the flea market. Happens all the time. Or a Lathario geezer,

same process."
A good friend of mine's mother died in her 60's. Bob is an only child. His dad remarried within a yr and moved his new wife into the home he had lived in for over 35 yrs, put her name on the title & everything. All his mother's personal things soon started disappearing from the house. After 5-6 yrs his dad died. When Bob received the call he lived 8 hrs away and it was 9:00 pm, so he told them he would be leaving at about 4:00 AM and be in there by noon. When he arrived his dad's personal possessions including his gun safe which also held valuable papers had been cleaned out by her adult children, and no one seemed to know what happened to his dad's things. The new wife continued to live in the home until she died at which time her adult children inherited it and everything else. Bob has none of his parents things.

Wills and prenups folks! Nothing keeps the prospective heirs in line better. Of course they can also mean money for attorneys.
It's never too early to have a will in place. Often times it is too late. For a simple estate a simple will, some can be found on-line, is better than nothing. This is particularly true when two distinct sets of heirs are on the prowl.

Guys, I am having a bunch of these made up with my picture on them and I will be giving them out as Secret Santa gifts. Please, don't hide your excitement.

"A month or so passed, and another detective summoned my buddy over to his cubicle....the family was selling the bathtub on Craigslist with no disclosure of it's history"
I almost bought a used racing seat for my old WRX. I went to look at it and it had an unmistakable large blood stain on it. The guy selling it had bought it used...from a wrecker.
