I don't have a link to a review yet but here is the SmokingPipe's description for Boubon Bleu.
"In this ... memorable blend, bright and red Virginias are mixed with just the right amount of dark-fired Kentucky and long-cut Perique, then married together with bourbon before being press to form an old-fashioned crumble cake."
ummmm, sounds delicious!

I think it's fabulous! I think Rich is going to too much trouble and should just deal tins like in April.

He wouldn't have as much work and he'd move more product. Perhaps a tin alternative?

Let's puff!

I'm sure Rich appreciates the sentiments. And we did discuss the alternatives. But after consideration, we decided on the sampler because we want to include as many members as possible in the crawl.
Not all of us work full-time. Some are students and others are on fixed income. I know some folks in the past didn't participate because they couldn't responsibly spend $40 or $50 on tobacco for the month. Rich put together Jeremy's Pax Pick Pack so that anyone who wants to participate could afford to do so. This was after I suggested several times that he could just sell tins, as Newbroom suggested. So, kudos to Rich.

Congrats to the new head blender Jeremy Reeves! You have very big shoes to fill! I currently have all of those in my cellar, so I will wait until the next crawl from C&D. I take it that Jeremy did not have a hand in these current blends?

+1 on the kudos to Rich.

Nothing to keep us from doubling up the order and getting the equivalent of 4 tins for $40.00.

Hey Everyone,
I am really grateful to all of you for the C&D love everyone has expressed. Thank you for participating in this Tobacco Crawl!!

And a really big Thank You to Rich of $ Noggins: Wow! Offering that sampler pack is super cool of him! What a deal! Rich, if you are listening, I thank you!

And another big Thank You to Brass, for facilitating all of this and for having such a cool idea and making it a reality. What a great hobby we are all a part of.
So I too, have a little of my own C&D love to share:
I have been smoking C&D for 12 years or so. And now I, for the last 6 months or so, find myself in a position where I get to work on all aspects of making a number of blends that have been frequently smoked in my pipes for most of that time. I count that as A. a real honor and B. a crazy and unexpected turn of events. I truly share the enthusiasm and curiosity about Cornell and Diehl that many of you have expressed thus far. Some pipe tobacco companies approach their repertoire with the intent to have one example of particular type or style of tobacco; i.e. VA Flake or Burley, English, Aromatic, etc. And there are very often good results associated with such an approach and very good reasons to offer very specific, and singular and hopefully unique specimens of each type that the brand chooses to offer. I like a lot of different brands, both domestic and foreign, that you would find in my tobacco cellar, and I smoke as diversely as I can, so please don't think I am criticizing a pipe tobacco company who takes this approach. I just think that Cornell & Diehl's approach to their catalog is interesting by comparison. What I love about C&D is that they have made a lineup that simply smoking through, is not only fun, but in my opinion, has the potential to be exhaustively educational to the smoker. The 200 plus existing blends, which I am so excited to be manufacturing, are, to me, a wealth of knowledge; these blends are like books on shelves, waiting to be picked up and read. The styles, approaches, and methods involved in producing these tobaccos are not only wildly diverse with quite diversely tasty results, but often they are innovative and unexpected as well. In such a large production list, as you might expect, there are blends, such as Autumn Evening or Pirate Kake, that are constantly being made, in order to keep up with the demand for them, and then there are blends that we simply don't have to produce as much of, blends that are not quite so popular. And ever the romantic and champion of the underdog that I am, I can't help but take note and seek out those blends, to see for myself what they are like, and I love it when think back on the number of times I have been pleasantly surprised or deeply rewarded. There are a lot of blends that I have been totally struck by or even moved by (Two Friends, Heritage and C&D Poplar Camp come to mind, as examples), that have not had much popularity but what they lack in quantity of adherents they make up for in the level of obsessive dedication that the few smokers who do regularly smoke them, have for them. Everywhere I turn in the C&D lineup, I find truly genius and excellent offerings to suit every taste I can imagine, and some of these blends have introduced me to a few tastes of my own that I did not know I had!! I am looking forward to continuing to further my education in this most pleasant way, and I see the Tobacco Crawl as an opportunity to unite with all of you who are participating, in doing so together. Fun stuff should abound from this!!

I would love it Jeremy, if you could give us a glimpse of how the change of address has impacted the lives of C&D employees, and how it has affected production.

You suggest that C&D has a broader spectrum of blends than some who 'specialize' in a genre.

I think the general impression of C&D has been that 'they' are the burley specialists. I can see that that is a double edged sword because C&D, obviously, makes much more than Burleys 1-4.

The designer brands you make for other blenders like Greg Pease or Tom Eltang, as well as your own extensive variety within the C&D catalog.

Thanks for sharing your time and knowledge with us.

Thanks, Dulgunz! I do indeed have big shoes to fill, and I intend to do all in my power to remain faithful to the existing blends, feel and approach of C&D while also continuing to push myself and the brand to continue ,as it has since it's beginnings in Craig and Patty Tarler's living room, to explore and probe this lovely subject of tobacco and the search for a good smoke. I am really excited and honestly sort of awestruck that I get to do this for my living!
And to answer your question: No, these blends all predate my short time at C&D, except Bourbon Bleu. The Bourbon Bleu recipe that went into production was a collaborative effort involving Chris Tarler, Ted Swearingen and myself. Each of us carried a part of what the blend ended up being and the parts all came together beautifully. However, I will point out that it is quite likely that the tins of AE, FOS, BB and PK that you pick up for the Crawl, may have been blended, or pressed, or cut or tinned by me. If the tin's date is within the last 3 months, the likelihood that I had a hand in that tin's creation dramatically increases. I have been traveling between Morganton, NC and Longs, SC for the last 6 months, with increasing regularity and length of stay, to be able to work with the Head Blender of 19 years Ted Connelly, and Blender of 10 years, William Harbison, to gain the knowledge and training base that I would need to fill this position. It has been a great challenge and I am enjoying that challenge, as I am seeing the results in lessons learned and the satisfaction of hard work and loving what I do.

Wow. Tough commute! Obviously we've got a good man for the job. A guy who loves pipes and tobacco making pipe tobacco blends.

It takes a team to produce a volume of consistent standard blends and innovative new ones.

Now I have the question? Brass described YOU as head blender in the first post of this thread.

Our June tobacco crawl will be hosted by my friend Jeremy Reeves, the new Head Blender and Production Manager for Cornell & Diehl.
You say that you're learning from Head Blender Ted Connelly and another long term blender, William Harbison. Are these guys nearing retirement, or do they just have 'the passion' to continue to produce one of the highest rated lines of tobacco blends in the business?

Sure, Newbroom, I would be happy to share about that.

The move of the company from Morganton to Longs has been in the works for almost 2 years now and at the time of the merger with Laudisi, the relocation was an obvious key component. All of the existing staff were offered roughly 1 1/2 years to fully weigh and determine whether they wished to move with the company or if they wanted to remain in Morganton. At the time of the merger, Ted C. announced that he would be retiring from his 19 year tenure, once the move took place but that he would remain Head Blender as long as C&D was in Morganton. Ted's home, family and personal history have all been in Morganton for almost all of his life and he knew that for him, retirement was going to mean that he could spend more time with his family.
At that point, everyone else seemed interested in seeing what things looked like as the date of the move got closer. All of the staff were Morganton natives with long standing family and social ties to the community and ultimately that led to to each of them in turn deciding to stay in Morganton. It is with a bit of sadness that we say goodbye to each of them in the company, but thankfully, I love Morganton and have found friendship with each member of the former staff and so I don't have to say goodbye really. My wife and I have plans to make Morganton a semi-regular getaway spot, and we have such lovely friendships there as well.
So we are really starting with a whole new crew, with the exception of Chris Tarler, who with his mother Patty, has moved to SC and has transitioned his role a bit, to be able to spend more time at home with her, while being able to focus more on the creative aspects of tobacco blending and no longer having to focus on day-to-day production and other functions.
The new crew is awesome too, and each has had time to train with the former employee in their position as well as cross train with the rest of the pre-merger team, so we all have big shoes to fill, but we have also been very well equipped and the whole crew, pre and post merger are top notch, so I am just excited and pleased and I think the new crew feels the same! The Morganton group have all been looking forward to pursuing other endeavors and at least 2 are starting their own businesses in different fields, so I think everyone there is excited for new things as well.

So, yes, I am the new Head Blender and Production Manager of C&D, but I have been learning the skill sets necessary and the procedures intrinsic to fulfilling these duties from Chris, Ted and William as well as the rest of the old crew, in order to move forward with our new crew. Cooperation and communication as well as shared passions and skills between the old and new crew have been key to all of this. Does that help to clarify your question, Newbroom?

Thanks Jeremy! That is such a human nature interest story in the making. This is a momentous change for C&D and it seems that the responsibility for its success rests in very large part with you!

I think it's a mixed 'blessing' that C&D has moved to larger facilities in SC.

Obviously, it seems, the loss of long term employees with critical knowledge of production methods and practices puts pressure on the new team. It's great that these folks are willing to help others take their positions.

I know nothing of a merger with Laudisi, or even who Laudisi is. A bigger fish I suppose?

Thanks for the Link beastkhk. Clarifies what seems to be a good thing. Regardless, looking forward to the Tobacco Crawl. Brass, Jeremy and Rich are super studs for doing this.

IMPORTANT CHANGE TO EXPECTED PRICING
I apologize in advance but I pulled the trigger too quickly when I announced the expected pricing for this month's crawl. Rich's estimate was based on the assumption he would be able to buy selected C&B blends in bulk. Luadisi normally could meet his request for special orders.
But as you know from this thread, C&D is in the midst of moving their equipment and inventory. Because of the logistics and unpacking, they will not be able to full fill special orders for retailers at this time. So, Rich will not be able to put together the 1 oz sample packages as planned.
However, he will put together a discounted package of full tins, priced similarly to last month's crawl of around $30 plus shipping.
I know some of you preferred tins anyway but I know others would prefer the lower priced samples. Count me as one of the latter.
I apologize for the mishap. I was excited about the package and published the price before we confirmed the source.
I'll provide exact pricing and order information soon, probably later today.

Thanks Jeremy for being interactive with us (the consumer)! I look forward in trying the blends that you have had or will be a part of. Just do not get rid of Pirate Kake and the Captain Earle's line! :D
