The time was 1:30 in the afternoon in 1974. My buddy Steve Parsons, who started me on pipe smoking, had a small still which was brewing his alcohol, and we were checking it about that time. The reason I remember the day is obvious. The reason I know the exact time is because I'm an infamous clock watcher, and when I lit up for the first time, I looked at my watch as I often do, and in this case, to record the moment so I could bitch Steve out if I hated it, which I obviously didn't. Btw, the tobacco he handed me was Borkum Riff Bourbon Whiskey, which was half decent in those days if you puffed slowly.

Steve wanted me to try the batch, and I said, "You are out of your freakin' mind, buddy. You made it, you try it." He wouldn't. He fed a sample to a mouse, and the mouse died. That ended the experiment. But, I was forever hooked on pipe smoking, and Steve, of course, quit after high school.

Even though I'm averaging 14-16 bowls a day the last few years, I figure 12 a day is a fair average for all the years. So doing some math, I've smoked 201,624 bowls of pipe tobacco which is about 1334 pounds. If you count the thousands of cigars I've smoked, I've probably smoked nearly a ton of tobacco since I started.

A babe in the woods. A tobacco virgin. A newbie. Don’t worry Jim, there’s tons of info on this forum so you can learn all about pipe smoking. Give it time and you might like it.

You sir, are an institution. Thank you for the treasure trove of tobacco and pipe knowledge. Cheers!

Thank goodness that mouse wasn’t Mighty Mouse!

Congratulations on raising pipe smoking and tobacco reviews to an art form!

I had a similar experience Jim. One pipeful and I was hooked. I had been feeling sick all week and was starting to get better. I loaded up on cough medicine and headed out. I spent the night partying with my friends in Old Town. Tommy Johns and I decided to go for a walk, see if we could find more fun when my friend pulled out his pipe. He lot up and took a bit and passed it to me around 3:47. I say around 3:47 because that's when my watch broke. A little safety tip kids; when your drunk and ripped on cough medicine, check the pipe that's passed to you. I thought it was weed, it was crack cocaine. The police found me euphoric running down Michigan Ave. buck naked wishing all the mannequins a Merry Christmas in July. Side fact, when you are naked in jail, no one wants to sit next to you despite what you may have heard. Well, I thought I was hooked until I found out how much cocaine costs. That's when being a cheap bastard really pays off. No more chasing the dragon for me. I found out pipe smoking was a lot cheaper and I rarely had the desire to take my clothes off while doing it. I say rarely, but that's a story for another time. Congratulations!

Jim, a few questions: Could Kirby take Ditko? Also, why so many Avengers? I was thinking there could be a chemical accident resulting in Captain Spider-Hulk and just get rid of the rest.
I knew both Kirby and Ditko. Worked with both as well. I was one of the very few non-family members that the Kirbys allowed to be a house guest (twice). Kirby was easier to get to know, but Ditko wasn't quite as reclusive as most believe. If you called him, he'd talk to you. If you wrote him, he'd answer. He did keep his distance, but he was always very friendly to me, and I liked him.

Why so many Avengers? The pay was bad.

Jim... We must be about the same age, I first smoke Borkum Riff Bourbon Whiskey back in the mid 70's as well, The bite of that blend and Flying Dutchman taught me to slowdown my cadence. Congrats on your 47 years.

YES, I remember your name coming up in an article I read on world carbon emission statistics he he, seriously though congratulations and may you have many more!
Actually: given how much tobacco many of you guys stash away in airtight wrapping for the afterlife, the net effect is likely one of carbon removal. The tobacco plant captures the CO2, the leaf disappears into the tin, the tin disappears into one of your stashes.. likely to be passed down the generations. TAD to fight climate change!
Anyway: congratulations Jiminks!

Jim, I thought you told me you began smoking a pipe at the tender age of 56. That would make you 102. After our last conversation where you clearly kept trying to keep your dentures in and asking me my name about 40 times , I told you it was Hugh Hefner you were talking to and you got so excited.

Harris, I lied about my age so you wouldn't feel so bad about smoking your pipe on Washington's boat ride across the Delaware.

Wow ... quite a history you have there, sir. Keep on pipe-ing, God bless you, as you are an inspiration for many of the fellows in the hobby.
