Others had tried these and for 12 bucks from ali express I figured I couldnt be hurt too badly. I started this tread for anyone interested and I will add to it over time. I have a real Old Boy that I decided to order but its not here yet. Today the lighter functions properly. If it continues to work it can be my run around lighter in my pipe bag. I wont be too sad if I misplace a 12 eruo lighter. Id be irritated if a good ligher disappeared.

First it actually works. Damn thing lights every time I strike it. It looks and feels good. Its about 14 grams lighter than an Old Boy and that is likely due to the real deal having a metal chamber...kinda important over time. But its 12 euros.

The pipe tamper works. Its a bit tight which is better than falling out.

Honeslty, it feels suprisingly good....

Of course time will tell how long it works. I have no illusion of it being a lifetime lighter but Ive gotten a lot of action out of disposable but refillable units.

Its kind of funny that they felt the need to engrave "Pipe Tamper" on the bottom of the tamper...

Here is a quick photo:

I find the Old Boy tampers to be almost useless. It's just so small, but I guess it is better than nothing in a pinch. But, it would be better to keep it with the lighter than lose it.
I don't carry any of my fancy lighters any more. Not because I am afraid that i will lose them, but because, once... I sat down in a cigar lounge, got my pipe, tobacco, and accessories all ready. The other smokers were all eying my pipe gear with envy. I prepped my tobacco, packed my pipe, and started a conversation about bourbons and such. Then, when I grabbed my fancy lighter, it was empty. Strike, strike, strike... I asked around the room, and everyone sticks their hands out with those blowtorch lighters that cigar guys use. No one had a Bic. So, I just looked a tad stupider than usual, ha ha. Plus, I had to pack everything back up and leave. Not a damned Zippo, Bic, or match in the bunch. Now, at least if I have a Bic that goes empty, it can be chocked up to "cheap lighter", but really, I can stop anywhere and replace a disposable lighter.

I have eleven lighters around the house. I use my Old Boy a lot. Good lighter. As for a Chinese made cheapie you can have it. Pipe smokers are just goofy as hell when it comes to paying for anything.
I try to avoid anything made in China, except clay teapots and some Pu Erh. But unfortunately, with some things it cannot be avoided.

I have a Jifeng lighter like that myself. Had it for years, served me very well with no complaints. I always liked having the tamper stashed inside the lighter, saves me losing it and it does the job nicely. The Jiffy cost sod all so I won't cry if it goes missing. I couldn't part with £100+ for an Old Boy, I'd rather spend that kind of moolah on a pipe or tobacco. Here's to your Jiffy adventures puffy

I actually ordered a real Old Boy too. I want one or two nice lighers. Since Im in France used Dupont lighters are everywhere for a low prices. I have one of those on the way as well. The rest can be the jifs and various refillable SideKicks. Those work pretty well but about half the time you have to click a couple of times to get a light. Its not terribly bothersome...Im not in a hurry when I smoke a pipe.

That's awesome, didn't know you could buy German electronics like laptops. That's good to know. I've never seen anything in the US . i don't really search out electronics but next time I do I'll look for alternatives. Thanks!
@Briarcutter Fujitsu laptops are made in Japan, all except for base model VAIO & the Gigabyte Aero / Aorus laptops are made in Taiwan. I love pre-owned / refurbished / vintage items and have acquired a number of them in the last year or two. Better than the characterless modern rubbish:)

I've just ordered a vintage wooden dustpan & brush set after my plastic dustpan broke & I can always find vintage tools, utensils etc. I use a vintage Smiths kitchen timer from the 1950s-60s on a regular basis.
My Redcoat was bought from an antiques shop in Matlock pre COVID; I'm wearing it for the UK Pipe Show next month.

That's awesome you can get Dupont lighters at a discount! Probably don't have to worry about knock offs either. To me, Dupont is one of the best made lighters.
The French love their luxuries and so many French have given up smoking (a pack of cigarettes is around 12 bucks now). Of course they are made in France so there are literally decades of unused Dupon lighters laying around.

You can pick one up in working order for around a hundred bucks for a ligne 1. If its really nice a little more. If its got signs of wear around 75. There are pages of them in French online classifieds. There is a small cottage industry for folks grabbing them and doing repairs.
