Would care to elaborate Mr. Georged?
Sure.
The achilles heel of threaded forums has always been "conversational predators". Individuals who know exactly what they're doing---and consider it sport---to watch the world burn from their tossing of a match.
If I were a wealthy man who enjoyed high end pipes---pipes whose cost was a HUGELY smaller percentage of my discretionary income than a can of butane gas was for most people---and most of what I encountered about those pipe brands on discussion boards was snarky, dismissive, butthurt bullshit from those conversational predators, who would then instantly hide behind "Hey, if you can't take the heat stay out of the kitchen!" type arguments when called out, I'd find other ways to enjoy the hobby.

Thanks guys. Knowing it wasn’t the OP makes more sense.
I sat in on a marketing meeting as in intern decades and decades ago with a US rep for Maserati, or the company holds a group of these cars’ acts in the US. They were discussing getting more people to despise these cars, because the number one drive for Maserati are people who trash talk them. The idea is that someone wanting that sort of performance would chose one of the sportier luxury cars, but a certain demographic, hearing people trash talk these cars, inspires people with “fuck you” money to buy them. Just an interesting spin.

You know, there are basically two opposite polls with the pipe world. Pipe smokers. And pipe collectors. Most of us here seem to be at least a little of both, with some leaning more toward pursuing high grade pipes vs those who are fine with a cob, and are just looking for a utilitarian cost-effective smoker. The problem is that smokers who are not much into collecting, love to shit on those into collecting. Their arguments mostly boil down to more money than sense, which tells me their mindset seems to boil down to more opinion than manners.
If you don't see Dunhill as a maker that embodies the roots, traditions, and British-ness of our hobby, you don't need to say they suck as a way of shitting on people whose opinions are not shared by you. Stick to your factory pipes, or whatever you're into.
If you don't see Jess (or Bo, or Lars, etc.) as one of the hallmark and all-time greatest carvers of our hobby, fine. Stick to your cobs and Grabows. Stop looking for tangibles that make these pipes hundreds of times more valuable than what you choose to smoke. Look, a first edition of some titles can set you back $50K, but it's the same fucking story between the covers as the paperback you can pick up for $0.50 at Goodwill. Can a pipe by logic alone be worth $10K? Not unless it's jewel encrusted.
If you wonder why more people don't post more pictures of higher end pipes and talk about stuff like that, which they find cool, the above, to me is the answer. At least that's why I only participate minimally here...mostly just scroll around when I've got time to waste...

I’d have one if I could afford it, got 2 of his Dads pipes, no need to trash something you can’t afford or have. I have a Rolex watch that is 30 yrs old, got it when jewelry store went out of business, had one issued to me in the sixties by the Navy, bulldozer killed it, did it tell time better than Timex, Takes A Licking Keep On Ticking, Nope, just an Ahnvee, Cajun for want. IMHO.! :puffy:

First, I'm with Georged and Briar Blues all the way. When I go to my local pipe club meeting once a month, I thoroughly enjoy sharing the thrill that a fellow club member obviously has when he shows off his $50 Stanwell that he got off of eBay. It makes me happy that a fellow hobbyist is enjoying his find and proud to smoke it.
I also thoroughly enjoy the thrill that another club member obviously had when he came to a meeting and showed off a 7-Day set of unsmoked Dunhill Amber Root Group-6 pipes that he had purchased over the summer at a pipe shop in New York. Both men were absolutely beaming when showing off their prizes and both were equally happy. The guy with the Stanwell has a water deliver route. The guy with the 7-day set of Dunhills is a neurosurgeon. Both were equally excited about the other's purchase. Now that, my friends, is how this hobby should (IMO), be enjoyed. I went home that night with a smile on my face and pretty proud of myself, too... because I am one of the co-founders of that club and felt like I was a part of all that neat camaraderie.
Good smokes to all of you - no matter what price the tobacco you are smoking or what price the pipe the weed is in.

My Jess story....after smoking pipes for a year, I decided I was also going to be a collector, the goal was to have at least one pipe from the danish family tree of pipe makers.
The first high grade or ultra high grade pipe I ever bid on (eBay) on a coopersark listing ... in his words the nicest Jess pipe he has seen and expects to see for many years. It was a smooth blowfish. I decided that I’d try to buy it, in the last 10 seconds or so of bidding price doubled to over 6k and I lost as the second place bidder... rob was right , never seen a Jess pipe remotely as attractive since.
I ended up settling on a smooth “classic shape” stamped pipe . I smoke it and love it. Still dreaming about that blowfish.

Well, this seems to have gone sideways somewhat. To provide clarity, I was asking the questions I asked simply to know who the collectors are here. Why you ask? To let someone know about a Jess C. pipe for sale. I bounced this past one of our esteemed members and alerted another member. All in the spirit of helpfulness. No dark intentions, I assure you. And no worries, either. Going for dinner now... :nana:

Glad you're enjoying your Jess pipe, Alan. I would estimate that 90% or more of the eBay auctions I participate in escalate significantly in the closing seconds through sniping tools. It's smart to use one, especially on a pricey item like a Jess pipe. If the right smooth shape happens along someday, I may pull the trigger, but at that price level, I've got to absolutely love it before I do. The blowfish is a shape that certainly shows off the briar. Great for a quick smoke, I expect, since they tend to be on the smaller side.
Agreed. +1 Ron... and George and Steve.

I'm not angry at Salted.
I appreciate his posts, whether I agree or not. The man has a vocabulary and can write. But I can also understand that sometimes a particular tone may not be appreciated at certain times.

Your conspicuous exclusion of Mothman is troubling.
EDIT: But I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and chalk it up to nicotine deficiency.
