I know i know i know, this topic has been beaten to death, but alas, im still curious. Is there any reason to take a fresh tin of tobacco out of the tin and put it into a jar? should i only do this if im letting the tobacco age? is leaving it in the tin just fine for me to open once a week and smoke it? will it go bad in the tin once open if i smoke it fast enough? is a jar only for aging? i will be pondering this as i stare at the bottom of my crown royal black glass.

thanks for the link. i think i'll do a half and half like one person suggested. put half in a jar for later, as i rarely open a tin and stick with just it, and leave half in the tin to smoke at my leisure over the next month or so.

I only jar tobaccos because I buy them in bulk. Much easier to keep the moisture level ideal. Never really done the aging thing, but then again I only really smoke aromatics right now. Haven't heard much in the way of aging aros. Usually, the aging goes towards English blends or non-cased blends.

I would always jar all of it, mason Ball jars work wonders, I'm really impressed with how well they seal even if you just slap the lid on and screw it up without properly sealing them like I do. I don't forsee any of my baccy ever getting dry. The reason I jar it is to make it easily available to smoke, soon as you crack open that tin, the tobacco inside will start to dry out and it should never be kept inside the tin, they don't usually seal well at all.

I had a tin of MacBaren Golden Extra that somehow got pushed to the back of the closet that I found about a week ago. It has probably been open for the better part of 8 or 9 months. I was a little worried when I opened the tin because I had remembered opening it and there was not much tobacco taken out of it, but I had figured that it probably wasn't any good anymore. Grabbed a big pinch and discovered that it was just a wee bit on the dry side, but I like my baccy dry anyway. Loaded up a bowl of it and it tasted just fine. This, along with almost everything in our hobby, is one of those things that differs from person to person. I buy small quantities of bulk and keep it in jars to keep it fresh and because it makes storage easier, but I too am not one who is big on aging anything.

Take it out of the tin and put it in a jar only if you have opened the tin and are not going to be smoking it relatively quickly.

If the tin is not open, you can simply set aside the tin and leave it until you are ready for it.

also depends on relative humidity. I used to jar everything to keep it from drying out when I lived in Ohio. Now that I am in Nova Scotia I jar it to keep it from getting any more moist. I have to wait till winter when the windows and doors are shut and the heat is on to be able to naturally air dry tobacco. I can keep a tin open indefinitely with little to no drying and sometimes I do actually gain moisture. So stick that in your jar and smoke it he he he.

The only thing I jar is bulk tobacco, or if I open a tin of flake and it all wont fit back in the

tin after rubbing out. I've never opened a tin just to put it in a jar. I age tinned tobacco in the

tin it came in, and age bulk tobacco in a jar.

I just put 15 bags of Penzance in Mason jars, but was disappointed in that the center disc didn't suck in after I screwed the lids on ( on any of the 7)and I had the jars hot enough that it was hard to hold onto.

If the tin is sealed, leave it sealed. If it's open, it depends on the tin. Square tins will be emptied and jarred, the tins that C&D, GL Pease, McClelland and Dunhill use tend to keep the tobacco pretty fresh in my opinion. I have a tin of Escudo that I opened a couple years ago that is still pretty fresh, just screw the lid on after I load a bowl and have never had any problem. They will dry out over time I'm sure but if you will smoke the tobacco in a month or so and your climate isn't too dry, you should be fine storing the blend in the tin. My two cents for what it's worth

I've opened up a tin and smoked a bowl

Here and there and eventually dried out. From that point on, every tin I open I jar it!

I try to jar every opened tobacco I have.

I never take tobacco out of a tin and then jar it for aging. When I open a tin, I then put it in a plastic tupperware like container so that my tins will not dry out. I can keep an open tin for weeks like that.

There is no perfect answer to this question. Here is what I do. I buy in one pound tins of what I like. I smoke out of those tins because they are air tight(C&D). Once in a great while it is necessary to spray a light coating of water on the inside of the bottom side of the plastic lid. That does restore moisture. If it is an open tin that I will not smoke frequently, I simply put it into a quart mason jar and screw the lid on tight - no problem at all for long periods of time. Some of the variables are: how often you open a tin to allow fresh air in and how much airspace is remaining in the tin. You make a judgement considering those factores. Fact is, a mason jar filled and screwed tightly will hold your tobacco and moisture level for a very, very long time. If it does ever dry out, it probably wasn't worth keeping because you are not smoking it, anyway. Personally, I do not buy tobacco for the sole purpose of aging. But, I do buy ahead and store tobacco, mainly, C&D one-pound tins.

It has a lot to do with the climate . When I lived in Vegas it was a must to store tobacco in a airtight container ASAP . But here on the gulf coast we live in a humidor so we get alot more table top time before we have to worry .
