Its Going to Be That Kind of Day Eh? (Warning: Pipe Breakage Content)

I had just spent a couple of hours, a few hundred q-tips and a few dozen pipe cleaners on cleaning up this pipe for sale. I've got to part with a lot of my collection to pay for some unexpected expenses and a job loss so it was one of the first bunch to clean. I was almost done with the inside cleanup and starting on the exterior when the damn thing literally came apart in my hands. Looks like a hidden flaw. It wasn't a great pipe, a 1960 Dunhill with a replacement stem and missing a lot of the nomenclature but it still sucks. Just had to share the irritation.

Glue and briar dust, good as new, but r more likely that’s what happened before you got it.

That or a crack would be my guess.

I'll probably put it in a restorer's bundle later. Either that or try to do something with it. It'll be used somehow. I even thought about putting it in a frame and calling it "art."

That would be very upsetting after the effort you've put in, even if it wasn't a Dunhill

If it were a cheap pipe I would say throw it out. But, because it's a Dunhill I would think it's worth fixing... but not selling. Keep it yourself and enjoy it. The right glue is important and I suggest using Zap-A-Gap. One of their gap fulling formulas should work. Good luck.

Stick it back together with high quality wood glue, it should smoke the same as before.

This looks like it had this crack for a while, a shank snapped on me once - all my fault - and the wood was very light coloured, indicating it was intact before, while half of the breaking point this has the same colour as the rest of the stummel suggesting it was there all along.

Glue! Several suggestions, makes me try to re-think my understanding of gluing a shank back together. I have thought it wasn't possible except with some big gap filler that would leave an ugly mark. And/or would come apart sooner rather than later.

Anyone got some examples of such repairs that have lasted a while- photos?

Here's the second pipe in the lot that I bought online. Again the pictures were terrible, and there was no information about them. This one seemed to be the most promising, until I got it in hand.... Yeah, that's right, Its completely split in two on the shank. Here goes nothing...

Here's one I did. The repair was very strong, but I haven't touched it since I "fixed" it lol. I don't smoke dead mens pipes.

But I'd really like to see/hear from those with such repairs how the pipe holds up with use.
