I suggest going with easy blends till your tongue gets toughened up. Or you might have VA specific allergy. Or you can put those VA blends in a jar for a month or two and try again.

I've been smoking about 3-4 bowls a week of various blends for 2-3 years now. I'm pretty sure my tongue should have "toughened up" by now. 🤣
The tobaccos in question have been jarred since last fall, maybe 8 months? I'm thinking it's probably an allergy, or just poor smoking skills😁

I alternate days between nasal snuff and having a couple pipes. Not sure if it’s the camphor and menthol from snuff or the Virginia and/or Dark Fired pipe blends, but something is messing with my tongue, too and it’s not heat. I’m taking a week from snuffing and piping, narrow my focus and hopefully find the culprit.

I too am sensitive to some tobaccos. I am allergic to burley and can't smoke it at all due to the excessive sulfites. Those cause a chemical burn as do red virginias and some flue cured virginias. So I smoke Sutliff 507-C and avoid the burn. I used to also get tongue bite or more properly a heat burn from smoking too fast and too hot which I don't do anymore.
Keep trying small amounts of tobaccos to see what works for you and what you like then stick with it.

Where are you coming up with information on Burley and sulfites from, what source? Tobacco contains sulfides, but where are you reading that burley has excessive amounts?

I was fortunate to find and compile a big list on the subject of bite, mentioned by professionals, and there is no discussion anywhere online I found in regards to sulfites in pipe tobacco, as an issue of bite, or sensitivity.

The post is here, the last reply…

If you haven’t tried the White Elephant Meerschaum filters, I highly recommend you try. These make a world of difference, and you might find you can smoke blends that once bothered you.

The Meerschaum also doesn’t distort/mute the flavors like charcoal filters. They create a drier, smoother delicate smoke.

If you don’t own a filter pipe, grab a Cob and put one of these in.

Mea Culpa, Mea Culpa, Mea Maxima Culpa !! My Apologies ... I missspoke, misswrote, screwed up ...
I meant Nitrates not sulfides. Burley can have 200% to 1200% greater nitrates. There is an enzyme in the mouth to process nitrates to make them beneficial for the heart. Some people have more of that enzyme and therefore are far more sensitive to nitrates. I am also sensitive to strong red wines with high nitrates.
I read several scientific papers on this topic. Unfortunately, I cannot find them at the moment but have mentioned this sensitivity on the forum before.

You were absolutely correct to call me out on sulfides, I apologize I meant nitrates. And yes I do use filters. I don't know if I can correct the prior post or the mods can correct word to nitrates.
Thank you.

Ahhh nitrates, no worries…

Well, to be honest I’ve actually never seen/read any discussions before on this.

I’m glad you clarified, as I was not aware of this before. Thanks 🙏

I found this government article, but it’s in reference to cigarettes.

Another factor contributing to nitrosamine concentrations in tobacco is the type of tobacco used (Johnson and Rhoades 1972; Brunnemann et al. 1983; Fischer et al. 1989b,c). Oriental tobaccos are lowest in both nitrates and TSNAs (Fischer et al. 1989b), whereas burley tobacco contains the highest TSNA concentrations

This article points out Burley having higher Nitrogen levels.

Virginia tobacco leaves contain a higher carbohydrate (e.g. sugars) level and lower nitrogen level than Burley leaves.

Here’s some interesting PH Info from that article too;

Burley tobacco produces a more alkaline smoke than flue-cured tobacco

This article states Nitrate Levels 10s to hundreds times higher in Burley.

Nitrate is present at concentrations tens to hundreds of times higher in burley tobacco than in flue-cured tobacco, with the reasons for this accumulation unclear.

Many factors such as nitrogen management, soil fertility, tobacco types and varieties, and cultivation conditions are related to nitrate accumulation.

Oh, no what will the Burley lovers think now! 🤔
