It looks like it's visible on the bevel on the bowl, which unfortunately indicates a crack and not the coating. So definitely not just splitting bowl coat?
I believe that was a demand. Not a request. No, but thanks.
LOLI believe that was a demand. Not a request.
Well, then…I believe that was a demand. Not a request.
@Piperjd-I second this with the caveat that only you will know the level to which this crack will bother you. If it will bug you every time you look at it, contact the retailer. If you purchased it new, you should be able to send it back.
that's the kind of thing that is there because it's no big deal and most pipe smokers wouldn't notice. Seriously the number of pipes with something like that which got sold and smoked with no issue is higher then you'd think. Remember not only is briar a natural material it's made out of root scar tissue (a burl) which means it will have things like this going on. Briar has pits and cracks because of what it is. Pipe makers of experience know when it's no big deal or when it's an issue. And there is a good chance your other pipes are have the same just not on the surface of the pipe.I guess I’ll just keep smoking this and hope it doesn’t burn out. Sigh
you don't want to be a bad host. Lucky for me I don't care about such things. Hey at least the custom at this point is you get to pick the mood music, so you got that going for you.Well, then…
If it was any other pipe I probably wouldn’t give a shit, but it’s the pipe that got me into pipes. Watching Rathbone smoke his in the old Sherlock movies is what started me on the hobby to begin with.that's the kind of thing that is there because it's no big deal and most pipe smokers wouldn't notice. Soon you'll forget it's there after you enjoy that pipe for all it's worth.
It's nothing compared to what ebay sellers. Right last night saw a pipe with half the chamber gone to cake buildup. But the bowl was cracked either 1/16" wide cracks running throughIf it was any other pipe I probably wouldn’t give a shit, but it’s the pipe that got me into pipes. That shape is near and dear to my heart and it breaking would break my heart.
By “the pipe that got you into smoking pipes” are you just talking about the shape? If it was any other pipe I probably wouldn’t give a shit, but it’s the pipe that got me into pipes. Watching Rathbone smoke his in the old Sherlock movies is what started me on the hobby to begin with.

No I’ve had it for awhile just been putting off smoking it. I mean the shape itself. I got into pipes by watching Rathbone in the old Sherlock movies and he smoked the 4ABBy “the pipe that got you into smoking pipes” are you just talking about the shape?
It’s unclear whether you just bought it or how long you’ve had it. If you’ve had it all year and just recently noticed the crack, I’d say it’s yours and just monitor the situation. It’ll either stay the same (as @georged’s example), or it’ll get worse.
If you just bought it, you may be able get your money back but a ’21 4AB POTY isn’t an off the shelf retail replaceable pipe.
I’d love to have a 4AB, but currently they’re not making any more.
smoke the thing it should be fine. Here is the rub though. Very rarely a pipe will fail and it can happen to a pipe with zero visual indication of cracks or issues. You're basically at the same risk with that pipe as one that looks 100 percent fine.No I’ve had it for awhile just been putting off smoking it. I mean the shape itself. I put another 40 minute smoke through it last night and the thing didn’t enlarge or grow.smoke the thing it should be fine. Here is the rub though. and then you'll really enjoy the pipe when you forget the crack is there.I put another 40 minute smoke through it last night and the thing didn’t enlarge or grow.
It might be nothing idk. I’ll keep smoking it
