Even days: align north & south
Odd days: align east & west

That means at the end of 31-day months, a pipe would stay either north & south or east & west for 48 hours straight.

There is no way to destroy a pipe more thoroughly.

I have had mixed results; sometimes when I smoke the same pipe back to back, the second smoke is not as nice as the first. Could be the pipe, could be my pallet is fatigued, who knows. Other times, I smoke back to back bowls and all is good. I will say I have better luck with smaller pipes with the back to back routine than I have with larger pipes. Been smoking 30 years, its still a mystery!

I bought a Savinelli and started smoking last July. I smoke more now, a lot more since I reired, but I smoked before I retired. My pipe kit really didn't work as well for me so it's been the one Savinelli. I hope to get a Peterson soon just because if something happed to my Savinelli I would cry many tears and be without a pipe to smoke. So, a little math: July of last year adverage of 3 bowls a day till Febuary= 8x30x3 or 720 Then Febuary till now about 7 bowls a day roughly 8x30x7 or 1680. So a little over 2300 bowls the same pipe. More important the pipe works well each time without issue. Thank you Savinelli. Although I think there are many makers of pipes that could achieve this feat as well. I do some things that may help. The pipe is cleaned quite often using just a paper towel and pipe cleaner. I always smoke a pipe that starts out cold, there is always a break of an hour or so. I know how to ream the pipe well. A large collection of pipes is something I envy. If I started earlier I would have a collection but I didn't start early. So, I think a collection is great but in practical terms maybe not required. (My one and only pipe is in my profile photo).

I’ve only been at this a few years so far, and only smoke outdoors or driving. I work full time in a job that is 90% outdoors or driving. My days off are usually spent putzing around my property outdoors much of the time.
That being said, every Sunday night I select two pipes that go in a pipe case and into my lunchbox. These get smoked all week at work, sometimes alternating, sometimes not, probably 4-6 smokes a day.
At home I often take a pipe outdoors and smoke the same pipe 2-4 times while doing whatever needs done. Every evening a pipe gets smoked for the evening animal tending. There’s one pipe in my personal vehicle that gets smoked twice a day on workdays commuting, and cleaned every week or three.
I smoke faster and hotter than general wisdom advises I’m sure, but never to where a pipe is too hot to hold for a count of five with bare hands so probably under 150* (mind you, the ambient temp for over a quarter of the year here is over 100* here). I smoke in the breeze, in the calm, in the sun, in the dark.
I run a cleaner through airway after every smoke and wipe off the stem.
Aside from probably a half dozen times I select a pipe to go sit outside for a leisurely smoke, all this is is done with the same dozen or so pipes out of a collection of probably five or six times that number. All of these will get a good cleaning every once in a while, and partially reamed when necessary.
Is this a rotation? I guess it is of sorts, but not by any rules or standards I’ve found.
I’ve yet to ruin a pipe, or even have one get funky to where when loaded and lit it was off-putting.
The vast majority of my collection are estates of 50+ yrs age and unknown smoking and maintenance habits.
Pipes are tools, and from what I’ve found, pretty good at doing their job when not subject to undue abuse. As with any tool, if they don’t perform their function I could care less how beautiful or elegantly artistic their form is, I’ve got no use for them.
Luckily, up to this point in time I’ve got a bunch of them whose form I enjoy, whose history I appreciate, and reliably give me what I expect when I want a smoke.

But if you read the websites, your not supposed to remove the stem for at least a day after every s.oke
What happens when you’re smoking and your bowl gets jammed, remove the stem and Czech pipe tool it. Yes I did this before I heard it would be damaging, and still do, to quote Britney Spears, whoops I did it again.

I believe pipes are little bit like guns...
When you take a gun to the range, shoot it, and clean it, it’s ready to shoot again.
However, if you don’t clean it, you have a nasty gun that might still work, but it’s not as efficient.

Ultimately, pipes just like guns are tools.

Some people own many guns, while others prefer to use only one.
Personally, I enjoy variety.
It’s not because I need to rotate... I could easily clean my pipe and smoke it again the next time I need it.
However, I believe that different pipes may suit different moods and tobaccos.

I appreciate having a diverse collection.
They are beautiful tools.

I agree with the OP. When at home, I rotate them because I have them. Variety is nice, and I might as well smoke a bone dry and cool pipe. That being said, I abuse the hell out of a couple of pipes when I go on a trip somewhere just so I can fit everything in the small dry box I use to carry it all.
