Must you rest them? No. But in my experience, rest has its rewards. After a pipe is cleaned, it of course needs to dry. The dryer the better it will smoke.

Of course, one can do what one wants and of course, one can defy the dictates and prescriptions of the simple men who smoked before us and shared their experiences and wisdom. Yes, some codgers smoked their one and only pipe day in and night through but that doesn't mean it was a quality smoke.

Fresh pipe, clean palate. If you want to eat of dirty dishes, nothing is stopping you. But would you really be a freshly grilled salmon on a plate you've been eating off of for several days?

It depends on the pipe I use. If it is of my "precious" ones, I let them rest. The others, my go to, cheap, beaten up ones, just get refilled and keep going many times a row, or a day. When it comes to cleaning them though, I do clean them thoroughly no matter precious or not.

Inexpensive, it can be a downright cheap hobby, cobs or basket briars and bulk is all you need…. If you smoke 30 bowls a weekend, that can add up, but lots smoke less.

For me, if you can rotate, you should. In my experience, continual use of the same pipe will eventually lead to a sour smoke. You can probably smoke this off in time, but then you're hammering the pipe and mistreating it, and having some poor smokes in the meantime. I get that smoking multiple bowls a day may not make this possible, but if like me it is one-to-three bowls a day, and you can afford to rotate, you should. Three good, stout pipes should be enough for any man.

Like many pipe related problems, it's an overblown issue. Will a pipe smoke best if it's clean and dry? Yes. Will smoking the same pipe several times in a day damage it? No. I smoke small chambered pipes and frequently reload and smoke back to back bowls with no problem. Just clean them after you're done smoking them for the day and they're fine.

All of this hysteria about rotation just makes newbies neurotic and has them asking the same question of "Did I ruin my pipe by smoking it twice in one day?" over and over.

This tired question... again?

Few things could be simpler, guys.

Just compute the reduced-snordly quotient of the tobacco's zelserborqe to necerok ratio ---

Adjust the qwerdly skornzod to accommodate the pipe's mahorglagen index ---

And dorfucate the helesion plathitude like this to determine residual taste effects ---

Compare the first with the second, and go with the larger index.

Duh

OR, you can forget that simple stuff and use this complicated method ---

Try it both ways, and if you think resting pipes is a good thing, do it. If you think resting pipes is unnecessary, don't do it.

Most likely a result of residual buildup and bacterial growth due to insufficient cleaning.

Briar is mostly moisture resistant. Hanging one up after smoking without thorough cleaning will sour a pipe faster than regular smoking.

I think of it kinda like shoes... it's a scientific fact that wearing the same pair of shoes day in and out will cause them to deform and wear out faster. Why? Because they absorb the moisture and heat from your feet. Using a boot-dryer or (preferably) resting them a few days between wears will allow them to last longer.. and by more than just a linear multiple of how many pairs you have.

Now, obviously, briar is nowhere near as susceptible to moisture and heat as leather or cloth... but I believe the physical principle is still valid... it's wood and wood is porous (even though it may be one of the less porous types). It also seems to be evident that pipes didn't last as long back in the day when men tended to only have 1 pipe and smoked them constantly day in and out... more burnouts, etc.

Am I terrified of using the same pipe in a row here and there.. not at all, and I do it if the mood strikes. I definitely would if it meant saving a backtrack from a vacation spot. But at this (hopefully) still early-ish point in my life I already have so many in my collection and am such a lover of variety in general, it makes no sense not to rotate.

I definitely think for the most part though people tend to wayy overthink and overbuy this hobby.. like most hobbies in our modern consoomer culture vs the past. Therefore, valid thread 👍

I have enough pipes I rotate them. I let them rest a while and clean them after each use. Pipe cleaners are cheap.
I have 3 Peterson 309’s as they are my preferred pipe and I regularly rotate them.

I have smoked the same pipe numerous times in the same day. No ill effects.

I have dedicated pipes for Lakeland blends though.
