I wonder, am I the only pipesmoker who when smoking never actually puts the stem into their mouth?
I simply purse my lips and press the stem against them. I really have no idea as to why I do this, it's certainly not a hygiene thing, it's just what I have always done these last 8 months of piping.
Perhaps this explains why I cannot get on with P-lip stems.
One advantage of course is no tooth chatter on my stems :D
Regards,
Jay.

Yes as long as you are enjoying fine tobacco out of your pipe that is all that matters. We might jest about you plowing your man card or other things, but all in jest.

No hangups regards tooth marks Cosmic, just a bonus that comes with my technique.
And yes, I enjoy my pipe smoking very much thank you.
Just because I don't actually insert the stem in my mouth that doesn't equate to me not being able to smoke at all. As I had no mentor at hand when I took up piping I just did what seemed most natural to me.
I am perfectly able to smoke in just the same way as folks who clench their pipes. I just tried with the (fishtail) stem of a Dr. McQuade Yorkist bulldog actually in my mouth and it felt quite alien.
Horses for courses I suppose but am surprised that it appears I am alone in this regard.
Thanks chaps.
Regards,
Jay.
PS:"plowing [ploughing] your man card" means what exactly?

I'm not sure what a Man Card is either. My wife wont tell me, ha ha!
Anyways, if that's how you enjoy your pipe then enjoy it that way. There was a guy that was friends with my uncle growing up that like to put two pipes in his nose and blow a steady stream of smoke rings. This was to entertain us kids, but moral to the story is... Eh... I can't remember. But, if that's your thing, then enjoy it.
