The description on smoking pipes says unscented, but everything I can find online says it's got a Lakeland topping of some sort. How can it have a topping and also be unscented?

Firstly, I guess it's important to point out that all tobacco is technically 'flavored'.

You can watch a tobacco production video on YouTube to get a better idea, but somewhere along the process you'll need to rehydrate dry product to work with it and whatever concoction you mix up will inevitably have an effect on the final product.

People like the McNiel's had a special recipe that made their virginias taste very ketchupy.

Likewise, Lakeland refers to tobacco made in a particular area with a very tradtional recipe, thus giving it its uniquely polarizing flavor.

The 'topping' you're referring to is more when a tobacco blend is basically finished and then an addition layer of flavoring is added 'on top', either as a spray or soak.

So does it have a noticable flavor? I understand Lakeland to be a generally soapy flavor. The Dark Plug sounds delicious as long as I'm not going to have a mouthful of Dawn.

A lot if not most of GH blends even if they state unscented have a signature casing that is probably part of their general conditioning for processing. It's not so much floral as it is sweet spices like cinnamon and clove.

Thinking about the OP I have never really noticed since everything I smoke has been drenched in Rose Geranium or exposed to it in some fashion. One day I might buy a new pipe just to find out!

I was just doing a bit of research and found that rose geranium is being marketed as a health elixir and people are paying top dollar for it. Apparently, it has anti-aging, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and inhibits microbial and fungal growth. I went further down the Lakeland topping rabbit-hole and found that Tonkin bean is used to make the blood thinner Coumadin and has blood pressure lowering properties. I'm sure in pipe tobacco, you are getting trace amounts of the stuff, but the anti-inflammatory and oxidation properties seem like a plus when drawing hot smoke into your mouth. Not to mention the anti-fungal. Maybe those old-timers had a method to their madness.

That being said, I prefer plainer tobacco but will have some St. Bruno here and there. Interesting information, however. I may have to dabble a bit more with these offerings and give 1792 a try just to say I did it.

I don't trust anything this company says. The recipes all seem to change at whim. YMMV
Just last week Rachel Gawith told me on Facebook that Kendal Kentucky and Dark Birds Eye have been discontinued, and that the currently-produced Kendal Dark is the equivalent of DBE, but that they label it as DBE for the American market.

GH is so screwed up.
They change the nomenclature on cuts to names only they understand but can’t quite explain. Then all this crap about renaming and discontinuing blends.

Their next step will be to quit manufacturing altogether and just rebrand STG products.
