Is a Meerschaum Worth Picking Up?

That's just the wax discoloring from the heat and handling. Wait until the internal color starts to come out.?
Other than aesthetics, I don't notice much difference from a briar but I do like how they feel in hand. They're also light in the pocket when I take them to work.
Just found out that you can do custom IMP orders through Meerschaum Market.
I love a good meer and I say go for it. You can abuse them unlike a briar. Smoke multiple bowls from it in one sitting and enjoy a good aromatic from one.

I only smoke meerschaum pipes in one style from one era. Sure buy one and see if its for you. As a pipe they can take a hell of a lot of abuse, if you buy the old ones you get a lot of pipe for your money. As @Chasing Embers says they are easy going on the pocket weight wise and can be fun to look at like some of @chasingembers pieces of art which are breath taking. I hope you find you new meerschaum and it gives you great pleasure.

I smoke several Meers quite often. Be aware, compared to a nice Artisan briar, the stem work and often, the drills, suck. A Meer may be slightly more neutral than a briar but mostly smoke the same. The lighter weight is nice. If you're a serious pipe smoker, you need to add a Meer or three to your collection. My best Meers are Altinay and SRV. I have an IMP that's good but not great. Note, don't expect it to color rapidly. The Altinay shown below has around 300 bowls smoked.

Typically it’s the shank that colors quickest. That’s neither heat nor handling.
And yes by all means, pick up a meer.
I have a Greateful Dead design in my head, Skull sitting on a bed of roses with a lightning bolt or dancing bear on the stem. Red white and blue stem. Been soooooo close to looking for a commission.
If you hit that with a heat gun or dip it in wax, that would dissipate, it's still just the wax. The internal coloring starts at the heel as an ashy color that darkens and spreads.
The brown is still just discolored wax but the darker ring is the color coming from the inside and that took 600+ smokes to get to.
Usually how long or how many round does it take for the inside color to come out?
Still working on it, but the discolored wax will even fade over time. The same pipe after not being regularly smoked.
To be noticeable? Usually only a few bowls. First appears in the "heel" and stem.
Mmmm.... have to regularly smoke to maintain the color ? . Interesting material.
