I'm gonna have to look that up to get the joke 🤣
The joke is that I'm too nice a guy! I was thinking of a thread where people were posting 'swan neck' pipes, and some of them looked like Pete 69's, and some, even less swan-necky. I restrained myself, and to the credit of all of us who know what 'swan neck' means - so did the rest of us!

This arrived today. I'm very pleased - it's authentic and I haven't seen anything like it from the Peterson Patent era.

It's 6" by 40".

This is a BIN. We know Peterson 9BC's were made during the Republic era, but this is the only one that I've seen stamped that way. I've also not seen the Straight Grain finish on a 9BC. Kind of a high price, we'll see how long it lasts. (with Peterson's these days, who knows the upper limits) It looks more like a shape 69 than a 9BC, to my eye.

Al, I agree with you on all points you make :).

I've had it next to other 9BC's, 307's and two pipes I have that have a '9' stamp. The bowl is the same on all except for the oddity shown below. The '69' look comes from the extended shank (longer than any of my other 9-shapes and definitely not as thick as some) and the long stem. I feel like the pipe should have been stamped '9B' instead, because of the long stem - the inlaid 'P' and bone tenon make me think the stem is original but possibly special order. Maybe someone wanted a 9B and Peterson pulled a stummel that was stamped 9BC?

As far as pricing, I'd love to discuss, but I'd be heading toward violating the intent behind this thread. I'll just say that quite a few of the pipes I post on ebay (450 remaining) will be ones that, like this one, are on the borderline of 'final collection' status (aiming for 50). As mentioned in the description, I'll probably pull it and restore.

Regarding variation in Peterson shapes and stamps - the top, smaller pipe with a much more acute stem bend, is stamped '9', is also stamped 'Straight Grain' and also has a bone tenon. It's actually a 312 shape. Go figure.
