Two rare Comoy's shapes ended this afternoon.

I picked up this Marshall Field & Company shape 256 Author.

Wiffed big on this Comoys 284 Tradition.

Okay, I still don't know how to create links like these two that you did, so I'll keep doing it my crappy way. If anyone wants to enlighten me, I remain, your obedient servant, and all ears (TIA).

Shape 1 Patent - same size bowl as an 01 House Pipe, but with a 309-angle stem. The pipe belonged to the seller's grandfather and was smoked pretty much not at all. It also has the 'Peterson's Patent' stamp on the back of the stem.

'Eire' - stamped Peterson house pipe. This one has a 2.4" high bowl - halfway between the huge O2 shown in the 1896 catalog, and the 01 size that is a little taller and fatter than a 309.

(I had been using the 'insert link' feature to insert links. Imagine me thinking that was the correct method 🤯 - thanks @ssjones)

It was more complicated than that (ebay doesn't leave us a good audit trail) - He had it as a straight auction, U.S. bidders NOT allowed. I asked him if he would ship to the U.S. - he changed the listing to add Royal Mail and also added a 'make offer' (which I didn't ask for). He told me he got quite a few offers, but after over a day, he accepted mine, which was very generous. I don't mind paying more than market for these pipes, as any particular shape that shows up for a Patent is often the only one you'll see for years.

This Peterson "Old English Collection" (11 minus one) went for $2201! I can't recall seeing that set in the last few years.

Weird - I have as many Peterson searches as anyone, and this never showed up. Good...I didn't have $2,202 to bid :)

so not the 50 pounds bargain showing on ebay.Never mind as you say they dont show up every day and your photo shows it cleaned up nicely.
Who can say what market value is when so few to judge on,you offered what you were comfortable with and it was accepted.
Both parties happy.

No, much north or 50. When you see '1 bid', but also 'or best offer', you can assume that was the opening bid for a straight auction, but there was a higher offer.

I have all the 1920's Dunhills I want, but none with silver bands. If I was collecting such pipes, I would have been all over this one. But to me it's ugly as fvk:

That re-stem would have been a piece of cake for George.

Sasieni Viscount Lascelles show up with some frequency, but I do not recall seeing a Patent era pipe, certainly not with the stinger. This shape is decidedly different from latter era Viscount Lacelles.

Heres a family era example I owned (believe it is in Greece now with a forum member). A fantastic bent billiard.

This one is a different beast.

The same seller sold this one, just as curious. The 256 is an Author shape, but this one is has a decidedly Rhodesian slant.

A 1930's example I owned:

.........

That's an incredible pipe. I looked at it once, realized it would sell for a fortune, and removed it from my watch list just so I wouldn't have to feel the pain of not being able to compete with the big boys.

Thanks for making me sad again :ROFLMAO:

It got a very respectable price, not the highest I've seen on a patent era Lascelles, which was an 8 dot that went for $1800 in a bidding duel between two determined collectors about 10 years ago.
The swan's neck is nicely done.
