Nice to see a discussion on eBay pipe sales. I'm a 20-year eBay seller and have a 100% rating, and I'd like to keep that rating. So for everything I sell there, I try to do the proper research, so that I can honestly sell it at an appropriate price, while also not cheating myself. I've mostly been selling items that my hoarding family dumps in my garage, but some of that "junk" has been bringing in some decent $. My recent collection, coming up for sale soon, are 7 "vintage" estate pipes, smoked by my relative in the late 80's, early 90's. I've been researching for WEEKS now, 1st learning how to clean the pipes, then accurately trying to understand each shape, the type of finish, the history of the maker, and of course, estimating the value. I find it very daunting, but also fascinating. Pipes are gorgeous things.
And then there's the Dunhill pipe I have. Wow. It seems like the Dunhill name for pipes is like the Leica name to cameras... and the older the better. I saw one broken D
unhill tanshell Briar go for $190 on eBay. Dunhill, unlike other pipe manufacturers stamps their pipe with a code, where one can decifer the year, etc., which is very cool. It's still a little crytpic, and I've found misleading info on the web. If any Dunhill experts would like to take a look here at a few of my pics, and see if I am accurate when I state that this looks to be a Dunhill Root Briar 53 (not sure what 53 means), but there is a 4 after the stamped "England", and that means it was manufactured in the 60's (?). The 3 refers to the bowl size and the R refers to Root Briar. It is a smooth Bent Billiard. How'd I do?
