This incorrectly listed 8-Dot did pretty well, given the condition of the bowl top. I wonder if we'll see it again on Ebay

Here’s one that I think went unnoticed due to the primary photo being blank. Some nice Britwood in there.

It was noticed alright, by two determined bidders that between them bid 82 times before topping out at more than eight hundred bucks. Most of the pipes have little value so the bidders (dealers I’m sure) are taking a calculated risk on the actual condition of the ones that justify buying the lot.

Yes, perhaps the pick of the litter, at least from my viewpoint. What do you think George, a 56?

It's size-wise a 56, but the curved shank is double weird. Never seen anything like it before.

100% guess: It's one of the earliest "experimental phase" Shells, when they routinely came away from the blasting process too distorted to be given a shape number, but were perfectly fine as smokable pipes.

1925 is my best guess, which possibly accounts for the "distorted" shape. I love the blasts from the early period .
I once read most went for the American market.

Nice to see a discussion on eBay pipe sales. I'm a 20-year eBay seller and have a 100% rating, and I'd like to keep that rating. So for everything I sell there, I try to do the proper research, so that I can honestly sell it at an appropriate price, while also not cheating myself. I've mostly been selling items that my hoarding family dumps in my garage, but some of that "junk" has been bringing in some decent $. My recent collection, coming up for sale soon, are 7 "vintage" estate pipes, smoked by my relative in the late 80's, early 90's. I've been researching for WEEKS now, 1st learning how to clean the pipes, then accurately trying to understand each shape, the type of finish, the history of the maker, and of course, estimating the value. I find it very daunting, but also fascinating. Pipes are gorgeous things.

And then there's the Dunhill pipe I have. Wow. It seems like the Dunhill name for pipes is like the Leica name to cameras... and the older the better. I saw one broken Dunhill tanshell Briar go for $190 on eBay. Dunhill, unlike other pipe manufacturers stamps their pipe with a code, where one can decifer the year, etc., which is very cool. It's still a little crytpic, and I've found misleading info on the web. If any Dunhill experts would like to take a look here at a few of my pics, and see if I am accurate when I state that this looks to be a Dunhill Root Briar 53 (not sure what 53 means), but there is a 4 after the stamped "England", and that means it was manufactured in the 60's (?). The 3 refers to the bowl size and the R refers to Root Briar. It is a smooth Bent Billiard. How'd I do?

Wrong thread to ask such questions.

This one is speculative discussion of eBay sales after the fact.

Which thread would be good? I'm not trying to sell it here, and I was trying to find a group of smokers who knew British (Dunhill) pipes well.

Wow!!! I bought a James Upshall Tradition for less than half this amount several month ago. Either I got a bargain or this one went high!! I don’t even think this is a great looking pipe, but that’s just my opinion.

Traditions (from the three size Empire series I believe) are pretty rare. That one is not a very attractive shape, with a stem with too much of a taper (to my eyes). 27 bids,I guess someone really wanted a big ugly pipe!

God Rustie, if that’s a typical sample of what you can find at garage sales in Hudson Florida I’m packing a bag and heading out tonight.
