People don’t understand physics. If you are 20 foot away, the smoke will spread over 2500 cubic foot and therefore it is 1/2500 th of what someone would get if he was next to you. Since there was a breeze, it will be even less than that.

However it only takes a few parts per million to trigger ones sense of smell. Therefore he was smelling your cigar.

He was not getting bothered by smoke. He was smelling your cigar, and making a psychological association.

I would never explain psychology or physics to a total stranger (Unless in an Internet forum) so if I was in your place, I would just play with someone else.

Honestly, I think it worked out better for you in the long run.

Having never played golf, it seems like one of those activities where one would expect to see a lot of cigar smoking.

Went out yesterday to play a round of golf at an amazing course, Waterlefe in Bradenton, FL. Felt like a golf course that was built in the middle of a freaking ocean. Was paired up with an older couple. I lit up a cigar on the first hole, noticed soon after the old fellow was holding a hankie or towel over his nose. This was a day with a constant 5 to 10 mph wind and I wasn't closer than 20 feet to them. He finally made a comment about being very sensitive to second hand smoke, had a bad lung, whatever. I made sure to increase the distance significantly more. I left my cigar in the cart when I went to the green and tee, the only times they were close to me anyway.

On the 10th hole, the guy asked me if I had any more cigars. I thought that strange but said "Oh yeah, you want one?" LOL He said no but said if I was going to smoke another one, I should just go ahead and play by myself. I was in the midst of lighting up a Padron 4000, I said okey dokey. They pulled up to me on a tee 3 or 4 holes later and said if I had finished, I could play with them. I told them no such luck, I'd likely be smoking through the end of the round.

I'm all for respecting other folks privacy and sensitivity to smoke. But you also have to draw the line somewhere. The Ranger on the course was smoking a cigar, I actually gave him an Olivia Serie V while we were chatting. I was never rude in the least to these folks and they weren't rude to me either. I struggle to fathom how the few miniscule wisps of smoke this guy caught from my cigar could have been bothering him.

The 4 some in front of me ended up inviting me to join them for the last 3 holes. Great bunch of guys, a couple were smoking cigars. They got a laugh out of deal and one of them asked for my number so we could hook up to play some golf moving forward. He was one of the guys smoking a cigar. Hope they don't pair us up with the smoke sensitive couple, that probably won't go well.
I can't help but wonder if you played with my old man?

Yeah yeah, but what did you shoot??? And did you take any money from the guy?

It worked out fine for each of us.

I shot an 83 from the Whites. It was a very, very challenging course but pretty and lots of fun as well. Wasn't any wagers.

If they got certain sensitivities the little wisps will effect them. Including allergies. And man when I had covid I couldn't even smoke a pipe because the second hand smoke was too much. My point is it's totally possible that the miniscule wisps could effect some individuals pretty severely.

It is possible. I smoked 5 or 6 bowls all through, my bout with Covid but everyone is different. It never got unpleasant and in fact, the remainder of our exchanges were pleasant. All that matters is he felt like it was bothersome and he politely asked me to go ahead. I had no issue with it. There's obviously lots of ways he could have been an A hole about it and he wasn't.

it actually surprises me how rare any "encounters" are. Isn't also amazing how much would be easier if people could manage being polite about it. You know for example how asking someone nicely to do or not do something seems more likely to actually work.

I play 2 or 3 rounds of golf every week. Being relatively new here, to date, I always go out by myself and am paired up with another 1 to 3 players. Including last winter when I was here, I've been very fortunate to have this be the first negative encounter of any kind. Obviously, this was very, very minor and never came close to any harsh or rude words being exchanged. The vast majority of people I've played with have proven to be very nice and enjoyable people to be around. In addition to never having to coordinate with anyone else's schedule when arranging a tee time, playing by myself presents the opportunity to meet a large variety of people and make new friends. I find most golfers are a lot like cigar and pipe smokers, generally very nice folks who enjoy life and making friends.

you must have very different golfers then many of the ones around here. It seems like most of the golfers here woke up on the wrong side of the bed. They also give me the impression that golf for them is about finding something to stress out about. You know the kind of people that break their expensive new club after messing up a shot.
That is awesome. Golf sounds like it could be a lot of fun to do especially if the people you do it with are nice. And seriously anything that gives you an excuse to be outside and smoking a decent cigar can't be all bad.

I think the difference is here in FL, I'm mostly playing with older folks whose testosterone had diminished and have come to grips we're not going to compete for The Masters. I'm here in FL where it is warm, I'm out having fun and enjoying some cigars. I've finally reached a point in life where a double bogey here and there isn't going to diminish my disposition in a negative manner.

Of course, but you can't just come out and say something like that on here! This is a class joint...

In case you haven't noticed, I'm liable to say about anything on here. I trust the vast majority of people here understand I am not saying it with any malice or ill intent but rather, find the humor intended.
