That is correct. Most of the "Burley blends" I smoke do indeed have some virginias, But not enough to bother me.

I do enjoy some MacBaren Burley flake and Old dark Fired (ODF is considered Burley, but I think its a whole other level).
But all I ever really smoke these days are blends by C&D
-Briar Fox
-Old Joe Krantz Blue
-Pegasus
-Burley flake 4

Some "Burley" Blends like Half and Half burn the heck out of my mouth. But I attribute that to the percentage of virginia (Half to be exact lol)

I haven’t tried any of these blends.
I’m going to check out the C&D blends. Thanks for the recommendations.

My dad smoked Half & Half when I was a kid back in the ‘60’s and ‘70’s to help cut back on the Winston's, before he quit smoking all together. I plan to try it for the nostalgia. Hopefully it won’t burn my mouth too bad ha, ha.

EMP is smooth and easy to me.
While on the other hand, Briar Fox just scorched me and it's a big crowd pleaser?
Sometimes I don't think it makes any sense based on the individual components, it's rather how the unique "marriage" of the leaf occurred....

I think you may be on to something. I have smoked other blends that contain red VA and not had a reaction beyond mild tingling on the tongue. But other types of Virginia can be tingling to me also. Could it be a specific Oriental? I do know that MM965 and Nightcap have Orientals and I enjoy these blends with no problem. Does EMP contain a different Oriental? I know nothing about Orientals. The descriptions state that EMP is stoved under pressure. Does this process amplify the chemical reaction? Oh, well. I will write EMP off and move on. It's not worth revisiting with all the other great tobaccos available. Hopefully, I will not have the same reaction with other tobaccos. As you stated with the "marriage" of leaf occurring, I think that EMP and Briar Fox are a perfect storm of tobacco and processing that hits us especially hard.

I kept a spreadsheet for the first 200ish blends I tried, not with lengthy notes, but just to help me figure out what I liked, with common components etc.

It seems a bit slow, but it took me 17 blends to find out I have a reaction to perique...

That is a good idea. I should get a notebook and record the specifics of blends that don't agree with me.

That’s a great idea as it might be something else completely

I bought an ounce of C&D Red Virginia. I smoked a bowl this evening. There was no negative reaction. No stinging, burning, tingling, or bite. So, who knows what component or combination of components caused the reaction I had to EMP. I also bought some bright Virginias and had no reaction to those beyond a mild tingle when puffing hard.

I have found this article to be very informative:

I have exactly the opposite reaction: the brighter virginias will literally give me blisters in my mouth if I'm not careful, but the burleys are fine. If it isn't a sensitivity (tends to build more than instant pain) or allergy (Not medical advice but... take two Benadryl [if those work for you], wait to be sleepy, and try again: if it decreases or goes away, then you know the problem) then it's likely PH.

So you have eliminated two of the four components of EMP. Next is Latakia and Orientals with the latter being a little more difficult as there is quite a bit of variation in type and flavour profile in Orientals. I'd say its the orientals causing you grief if I was a gambling man based on your recent post and I find EMP to be very incense like when I smoke it rather than sweet and buttery which is my preferred oriental. Also orientals carry quite a bit of sugar so be aware of that.

I do not believe it is Latakia. I smoke four blends with Latakia on a regular basis with no problem. I enjoy MM965 and Nightcap with no negative effect. The tin description of both list Orientals. Perhaps EMP contains an Oriental not included in these blends, or at a higher ratio? I think you may be on the right track as the three Peterson blends mentioned are the only blends I have smoked that contain Orientals.

I can hear howls of protest - but I find EMP to be my best substitute for Esoterica Margate, which has always been my tobacco of choice. I do cut the Margate with some Pembroke as well. For anyone who is tired of the Esoterica shortage, try EMP

Could be tobacco or could be the processing. For me that's Union Square. Tin note made me slobber. Could not wait to fire it up. 3 puffs later and all of the saliva in my mouth is GONE and I am on fire. Similar experience with Virginia No1 which from a flavor standpoint is one of my favorites but I can only smoke about a half bowl at the end of the day due to the tongue bite!
