I inhale, not every puff though, but it's how I enjoy pipe smoking and I find it's how I get maximum enjoyment and flavor. I inhale brown bogie. I find pipe tobacco to be much more natural than cigarettes, so I think it's not as bad as smoking cigarettes. I also only smoke 2 bowls a day. I also inhale cigars. I retrohale too but find after awhile I start getting brown stuff coming out of my nostrils, which can't be much better than my lungs in the end for my health.

Smoke how you feel comfortable. I inhale, and won't apologize for it. Pipe smoking is like golf, it's a one-man game. It's gotta be comfortable for you.

"I inhale, and won't apologize for it."
Dan, no one is suggesting you need to apologise for inhaling, the OP was merely asking as to whether it was a good or bad idea to do so.
It seems the general consensus is that it isn't a good idea to inhale and good reasons for not so doing have be suggested.
At the end of the day we are all adults and as such we make our own decisions based upon what knowledge we have or perceive we have.
Inhale away my friend, it's not my lungs taking in your smoke :puffy:

Jay.

One of the advantages of pipe smoking is that you don't need to inhale. I wouldn't. I don't like retro-haling either. It just exposes the nasal mucus passages to burnt products. Obviously, people do what they want or feel they need to do. But pipe smoking and then inhaling is like driving a convertible, with the advantage of being able to ride in the open air, and then never putting the top down. Obviously, this is a freewill decision. I vote no.

If it's a mild smoke I may rarely inhale once or twice early in the bowl, just for curiosity (same with smoking a cigar), but general I find pipe tobacco and cigars too strong and unnecessary to inhale. Without inhaling I definitely feel the nicotine in pipe tobacco, so, other than the physical pleasure one may feel from inhaling, it is not needed to enjoy the tobacco. If inhaling is a habit I would break it and just enjoy the tobacco with some retrohales. I don't know if it's the same for cigarettes as I have never smoked a cig without inhaling. It seems like without inhaling a cigarette it taste and smells like crap (a lot do anyway, inhaled or not).

Retrohaling is good for both pipes and cigars, good for exploring the flavor beyond straight puffing.

While working at my workbench and clenching, when someone comes up and asks me a question smoke will poor out of my mouth the whole time I am talking. I am pretty sure that it is just getting pumped down into my gullet while breathesmoking and not the lungs, but it sure seems like I am talking with a lung full.

Oddly, I found myself smoking an American Spirit Black cig recently (their Perique blend), and noticed I was retrohaling and not inhaling. I do inhale the pipe smoke occasionally though.

When i see something comical and laugh, i will accidently inhale, i do lots of retrohailing though, but yea i learned my lesson with cigars, when in first smoked my stogie, i was trying to be cool by inhailing, man i turned so green, i was crawling on all fours by the end of the cigar.

I'm a nicotine-addicted former roll-your-own smoker. When lighting up the pipe, I inhale several puffs to quickly satisfy my nic crave.

And then I smoke.

I'm a clencher. And while the pipe is in my mouth, there be smoke in the pipe, in the stem and in my mouth. And I'm breathing all at the same time. I'm pretty sure smoke gets in my lungs...not all of it, but some.

Man up...smoke Old Joe Krantz. You'll not need to inhale at all.
I smoke a good share of Brown Bogie, Black Irish Rope,Plugs , and etc. None of them give me the nic hit that OJK does for some reason! Good, shit....

Funny, no place rates it as particularly strong in the nic department. I've always been curious to try Brown #4 and 5 Brothers (singly, not blended), but the taste review profiles kept me from it.

Old Joe Krantz has a lot of Dark Burley, which is strong to some and not others. From my observation, some of us experience greater Nicotine, usually hitting in the stomach, with Dark Burley than any other leaf.
I highly recommend the Five Brothers if the smoker accepts that it is a single-leaf Burley blend, and so it will have a nutty flavor with some sweetness but not much external variation. I taste a lot within that narrow band, but some like more of a trail mix approach like the English mixtures.
I recommend Brown No. 4 in a different vein. It is powerful stuff, and a bit of an oily mess to cut up and get loaded into the pipe, but then it is a mountain of rich flavor and raging Nicotine. I hope you get a chance to try these.

I intend to. I could always mix a spoonful of Blood Red Moon or BCA into the 5 brothers if the taste is too one-note for me. The Brown #4 being an oily mess sounds like every other Gawith blend I've tried, and liked. I'm curious to see if I feel any nic from these, as I have never felt any from any pipe tobacco or cigar I've ever smoked unless I inhaled. And no I've never been a cigarette smoker. What I look for from a nic-hit is a head-rush, not the sweats and an urge to puke!

I seem to do a lot of second hand smoke sniffing. Love the smell. I smoke outdoors and love the smell of the smoke. But there is a big difference from that and directly inhaling.

I too like Jack like to smell second hand smoke from another person smoking a pipe. In the days afore they banished all smoking in pubs here in the UK on the rare occasion someone was smoking a pipe I would actually go and stand nearby just to get a whiff.
Those days are sadly now gone.
Thinking about it now I have to wonder why I didn't take to the pipe years ago.
Regards,
Jay.
